Oregon is a full service state by law. That means you can't pump your own gas. So I ask for $50 in gas. I hand her my card and she starts the pump. After about a minute or so she ask "is it always this hard to get the nozzle in the tank?" I turn and look and the handle is green. I look up and she's pumping diesel in my freaking tank. I tell her to stop "loudly". I tell her that she's pumping diesel in a gasoline tank. She looks confused. I walk inside to talk to the manager. She doesn't know what to do. I call my insurance, they cover towing, but not service. I call my buddy, who is supposedly a mech and he tells me 3.7 gal in a 20 gal tank should be ok. It will burn off. I call another mech who tells me it's not ok and they can drain my tank and I should be fine as long as I didn't turn the ignition on. I didn't. Tow truck arrives and I get towed to a mech. They drain the tank and all is well. While there, I ask questions. What would have happened if I ran with that mix? He explains to me that a lady did just that, 60/40 gas/diesel mix and they had to replace everything. Injectors, lines, etc.

Lesson learned: if this happens don't run the truck. Also, insist, if its full service, that they pay for everything. They did.

Thought I'd share.

On a similar note:

Here in Ohio we have those "Get-Go" gas stations that let you spent "points" from Giant Eagle grocery stores for $ off gas. Well last week the tanker guy filled up one of the in ground gasoline tanks with diesel. Talk about a big cluster F**K. Lots of people had that happen to them unknowingly until later that day when the station was calling all the customers.

How the fuck does a gas station attendant not know the difference between gas and diesel? That seems like pretty much the only knowledge needed for the job...

Put diesel in an old Surburban once. It ran a little rough and spit black smoke but it had carbs. Ran fine once we used up the diesel mix. It was a ranch truck and never saw hwy..

Last year, a gas station in my city got diesel in its tank instead of regular by accident. There was a lot of cars that got diesel into their tank without knowing it(500 going by this article). All these people came back to the gas station complaining. The gas company had to pay to get all the cars fixed back up to par.

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201..._drivers_unknowingly_fill_up_with_diesel.html

I had a brain fart when I bought my Golf a few years back. I sat there for a few minutes trying to remember if I bought a diesel or a gas car after I filled up. Once I read the gas cap, I was good to go. Phew! That was a close one.

It happens. I did it once before on a Mercedes. You get to a point where you take it for granted. Customer pulls up past the unleaded, you ask how much, you reach for the nozzle, it fits, you pump. Said "uh oh don't start the car". Cost me $100 out of my paycheck to get the tank dropped. Had they started up, they'd be half way down the road and toast. Per mechanic it was due for a cleaning. Lot's of great stories from my youth, drive off without paying, people smoking at pumps, and stretching hoses to the street, crashing into pylons..... Great memories of the 80's.

Under Oregon Revised Statute 480, putting diesel in your truck promoted the public welfare, increased your safety, was more convenient for you, and since the service station paid for the repairs, it did not cause you economic harm. What's all the fuss?

http://www.leg.state.or.us/ors/480.html

480.315 Policy

(13) A general prohibition of self-service dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids by the general public promotes public welfare by providing increased safety and convenience without causing economic harm to the public in general

I had an old Volkswagen and they would always let me fill it up myself (however, they would run the card, you could never do that). Same for a motorcycle, but the motorcycle is actually defined in the statute...I can't believe you have to hand the nozzle back to the station attendant to hang up the nozzle and end the fueling.

A) May dispense Class 1 flammable liquids into the operator’s motorcycle. (B) Shall, after dispensing the liquids, return the discharge nozzle to the owner, operator or employee.
(3) The owner, operator or employee who is handed the discharge nozzle shall return the nozzle to the pump or take any other actions necessary to ensure safe completion of the fueling operation. [2001 c.344 §2]

Damn TW chick, she just wants a diesel taco real bad.
Still though, (At work) we often pump our own gas or diesel on our rigs, I get paranoid I grabbed the wrong one and double check a lot.

Do pumps in the USA have different pump nozzles for diesel and regular? Or are they all the same?

Now I am surprised the gas attendant messed that up.

Green nozzle is diesel in Oregon usually.

Do you need an education to pump gas in the US?

I use a station where the diesel pump island is separate from the gas island.
Found that place... when I did have a diesel.

Do you mean the public at large or the states (Oregon and NJ) that do not allow you to pump your own gas?

Public at large requires no training (nothing formal). In Oregon the gas station attendants are trained. They do not necessarily need an education to become a gas station attendant. Is that what you were asking, or are you being facetious?

I didn't trust green nozzle, I checked for the "diesel" label and such.
I'm sure anyone distracted or not knowing anything abut fuels could screw it up though.
We have a B5 and a B99 pump, better know what rig can use what.
