Picked up a hell of a rattle, shows up most at fast idle at start up then goes away after idle drops. I can simulate most of the time by just idling it up. Had wife do it while I checked and sounds like to me the inside of the converter is rattling. Any thoughts ?

There is a crappy clamp Toyota uses on the left side cat. Many times they break, but they don't fall off. They just vibrate towards the rear of the truck. Follow you left pipe backwards until it bends towards the right. That is where I found mine. I overlooked it twice because it had rusted and blended in with the piping. My money is on that.

Even though the clamp is missing from the back of the cat, my cat doesn't rattle, but perhaps yours is. See the below thread for a picture of the clamp I'm referring to.

First pic is heat shield I took off. Question, is it the catalytic converter shield and if that's the catalytic converter(2nd pic round object) what's the little muffler looking thing behind it without a shield ? And can I go without this shield I just removed ?

That round thing is your other cat I believe. You have 4. And it's cool to run without them. I don't think they do much anyways

Oops my bad, you only have 2 then I believe. Ill let someone with more 4 banger knowledge step in and correct me if I'm wrong here. I'm not sure if you have a resonator on your exhaust or not. If its not another cat, that's probably what it is. Does it have any wires/sensors running to it?

If there's one in front and behind it, it's probably another cat

Beat on it with your fist and see if it rattles if it does it's inside the shields are to avoid setting the grass on fire under the truck.

I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't hurt the floor pan leaving the shield off. I may end up putting it back on, I've been know to wade some weeds in it getting to a fishing hole. I'm just glad I got rid of that damn rattle !!

    You may.
There is a shield on the floor pan, but it was designed to protect against a shielded cat. Keep a close eye on floor temperatures, you don't want to melt your carpet.

My dad had a '74 Blazer and when he installed headers, there was enough heat from the collectors to melt the soles of my Chukkas. He fabbed a shield and added glass under the carpet.

my truck rattled for a long time until i found out the noise was from the cat as well. i went to the car wash and put the head of the pressure washer into an opening in the heat shield without taking anything apart. the pressure of the water blew out chunks of dirt and rocks and the noise was gone.

That would have been to easy and I wouldn't have got to roll around on my back grinding the head of the bolts off.
