One of my coworkers has an 08 AC OR. He had a shock (bili) break already. He called Downey and asked about what he should upgrade to. They told him he can't do any type of lift on 08 or 09 Tacos because the 4 whhel drive will no longer work (due to splines not engaging). Is there any truth to this? I haven't heard of this elsewhere. He was told to get around this you have to put in manually locking hubs. The only thing I gave heard is that you shouldn't go >3" on the 09 due to the VSC. Does anyone have any knowledge on this issue?

I am pretty sure there are lifted O8 and 09's.

He's an idiot. 4x4 works just fine. When you go up and past 3" (without a full drop bracket lift) you need to keep an eye on your CV angles on a 4wd, but that's it.

Go to your dealer and have the bilstein replaced under warrantee.

Decide on a lift later. Do some research on the Bilstein 5100's.
