Something Loose

Hello All. I have a 2010 Double Cab Tacoma V-6. When I stop and take off (like in stop and go traffic) it feels like something is loose. I get a bump each time I take off. I got up under the truck and looked for anything loose and tightened every bolt. Nothing was loose. Any ideas ??

Thank you so much for your response. By Slip Yolk are you referring to the yolk that goes into the rear axle ?? And by "Joints" I assume you are referring to U-Joints ? Thanks again Boss !!!

Check the U-joints for play. More than likely you need to lube the driveline components. It's also a good starting point to get in there and troubleshoot.

I also vote slip yoke. just had this fixed on my 2011 reg cab. Unfortunately this is extremely common in the 2nd gen trucks. Your slip yoke at the front of your rear driveshaft is binding up when stopping or starting. when that pressure is released you get that clunk feel. The 2nd gens have a dana spicer driveshaft that also unfortunately doesn't have a grease fitting at the yoke (I believe the 1st gen Tacomas driveshaft had one). You have a few options to fix it. 1) if your still under warranty do what I did and take it to the dealership and if there reputable you shouldn't have a problem getting a new driveshaft. 2) take your driveshaft apart and grease the yoke ( although since the driveshaft u have now is considered defective you may have to do this every xxxx miles from what I understand) 3) I seen another thread on here where a guy actually had a grease fitting machined into the yoke section so he could grease it without having to take apart the shaft. not sure how that worked for him though. honestly ive talked to a few about this and I know one guy who has had this issue for a while and never fixed it and his truck drives fine. good luck

I plan on drilling and tapping a hole for a zerk fitting myself. One of the guys in the NE BS thread pulls his all apart and cleans and lubes it every 10k or so.

You could probably ignore it, but I do not find this advisable. Anytime there is strain or stress due to a lack of lubrication you are eventually going to end up with damage of some sort.

yea tapping a fitting seems like it would be a great fix. The thing that bugs me about this issue soooo much is that it is soooo common yet Toyota has done nothing to fix it. When I had mine replaced my guy at the dealership told me he sees this ALOT. Actually he almost cut me off when I was explaining what my truck was doing. this specific dealership had delt with this many times before. He also told me that there was a recall in the tundra for the very same thing (I guess they use the same shaft or a similar design) so why not the Tacoma?

 

The emperor works in mysterious ways... Still trying to figure out why the oem leafs are still dogshit after all of these years. Best we can do is mod these trucks so we don't have to deal with the BS.

 

Thank you guys who all submitted a response. I am going to climb under the grey ghost tomorrow and take a look and see what it is going to take to grease or lube the shafts. Wish me luck. Thanks again guys !!

I had a bump at stop and go. Turned out to be my spare tire was loose.

 

Good idea! Never seen one come loose but I reckon it's possible.
