This is why our insurance cost so dam much... the repair shop can charge pretty much what ever they like and the insurance will just hand over a freaking check.

Sounds to me like the shop is trying to charge for an entire body harness and tailight as well as the full time to install the entire harness which would be about 8 to 10 hours at mechanical rate. I am sure the reason the insurance company is paying the entire amount is liability, if they authorize a repair of the harness and it fails and causes more issues they will be on the hook again down the road. If they authorize a new harness and the owner decides to repair it instead the liability is now on the owner and the repair shop that did the repair.. More money for the insurance company to pay out but it covers them in case of issues down the road and we all know it is a Cover Your Ass world anymore with everyone being so sue happy!

Thanks but the harness i need goes from the inside of the cab to the right tail light. The dealership quote me at a little over $500 for that harness.

you don't have to replace the entire harness. All you need to do is solder onto the cut wires in your existing harness and you'll be all set.

Here are some pics I just took. The truck is very dirty from our first and only snowstorm of the year. I have been meaning to post a thread with pics of them after I wash it.

Sucks to hear about what happened. Honestly, I would not have gone through insurance to take care of it unless I was absolutely strapped for cash. If you find the parts, I'll come down to Oxnard and help you solder the wires in.

    Welcome!
    My suggestion...
The insurance company wants it done professionaly... But doesn't mean that place has to do it.
    Quote a few different places.
    Take the highest amount.
Tell the insurance people that much.
Then go to the cheapest one.
Take the extra cash and buy a tailgate lock

Doh... didn't read to the end of thread...
Well atleast its being done right...

Big mistake taking it to the dealer for that kind of cash! As said, it could have been dont in many other, better, cheaper, ways. Oh well. Live and learn.

Too bad...this is why insurance costs too much.

I would've taken that $2k and ran away. Find a ring-ding body shop that would do it for $200 and pocket the rest. If the ring-ding shop found more that needed repaired, they would've subrogated the insurance company for the additional costs.

You were handed an opportunity to make some money. Oh well, your way takes less effort.
