Just got my Tacoma and looking for suggestions on how / what to do to get a bike mount on the bed rail. The tricky part is that I have a soft tonneau cover that rolls up to about four inches in diameter and lays over the rail.

Are there stand offs or larger mounts out there that can be used to get out past the cover?

you may be able to fabricate something. i got a fork mount at my local bike shop and just used bolts and washers to sandwich it to the rail. it holds nice and strong even over trail head terrain. and is easily removable. maybe something similar with a support leg to hold the weight...

Do you have a rail ? Some member have made mounting block for their rail. You can also get one on eBay for cheap.

I think the OP is saying that his cover rolls up and blocks the rail. So the bike forks won't be able to reach mount. I would attach some mounts to the bed floor. Or use the existing holes where some have added d rings and mount a couple fork mount to a 2x4 and make it removable.

There are some good ideas. Search bed rack, Thule, Yakima in this forum. You can add tracks, podium feet, add on rain gutter pieces for feet. Sorry, I'm on Tapatalk and have no idea how to attach the link

Great suggestions but jdmdcfan is right, the problem I have is that the forks wont reach the mounts. I do like the 2x4 idea to rest in the bed. I was thinking of the bars that go across the bed, but the cover lays over the edge of the bed where the bar would attach to.

A member here is making bike mount rails that attach to the underside of the bed cleats. Others have posted in that thread about it fitting under the bedcover. Lemme see if I can dig up a link to it, just saw it the other day............

Here it is, lots of pics. Versatile for many uses. Mounts on top or bottom of cleats. Move them around where you need them. Mount anything to them.

I'm not an engineer, but one thought would be to have a bed rail mounted on the floor of the bed near the front of the cab, with room on each side to slide attachments on or off, or twist and lock like the tie downs.

Then you could possibly use any bed rail attachment for mounting on the floor of the bed. For instance a slide on fork attachment, tie downs which could be removed after you are done with them.

My thought for a lower mounting point would be something that fits into those square notches already in the sides of the bed about halfway down. There is one in front of the wheel well and one behind it.

That's essentially what I suggested but a cheaper version with a 2x4. A rail would work too.

Actually a bed rail mounted on the floor would be better. It's low profile and instead of mounting the bike mount directly to the rail like most have; you can mount a bed cleat and a bike mount that attaches to the cleat (forgot the brand) so it would make it quickly removable.

Hey . . . Great minds think alike! Although mine works a little slower these days.

Great suggestions. Thoughts on how to mount a rail on the floor?
