A friend has a truck (not a Tacoma) has has close to 300.000 KM's on it. He was telling me tonight he dumps in a liter of diesel fuel in the engine and fires it up and lets it idle untill the engine comes up to temperature. He does this everytime he changes the oil, as soon as the engine comes up to temp he pulls the plug and drains the oil. I think it would clean any carbon deposits off internal parts and flush the whole engine?????

I don't think that putting a little diesel in his gas tank before oil changes has been the difference between hitting 300k km, and blowing up from carbon deposits.

You drive a Toyota, you'll easily hit 300k by doing regular maintenance

Does it work, yes. Is he taking a chance, yes. I would suggest that he use a good quality oil and filter and forget the diesel flush.

    I should have known better
i thought i might get some valid reasons for or against
instead i got responses from people who don't know how know the engine oil from the coolant.
i don't think my friend is stupid he has an engine with 300.000 on it and compression tests show that he is within 3 PSI of a new engine.

If you don't have anything constructive to say, don't say anything at all.

If ya don't know what your talking about don't say anything at all.

So why do you believe that a mixture of oil and diesel will clean carbon deposits on surfaces outside the combustion chamber, or that there are even carbon deposits on internal parts that need to be removed?

Do you know what you are talking about?

I was thinking about carbon deposits on valves, i was thinking the diesel might act as a solvent and help clean all internal parts. I was thinking it could be worth a try, i know there should be no problem getting two to three hundred thousand out of the Tacoma. I got over three hundred thousand out of the last one but if there is something i can do to maybe make four hundred thousand i would be interested. Yes i know what i'm talking about, i have worked around equipment and machinery for the last 30 years, i've seen more than a few engines get torn down and rebuilt

I know people who have done all their required maintenance and had engines quit before 60k miles and people who have barely kept up with oil changes and had engines make it to 200k miles. There is a bit of luck involved... Dumping diesel into the engine (even though you still haven't said where you puts the diesel) isn't the secret to success... You can run a 0W-20 oil before oil changes if you feel the need to flush the engine, I would guess the assumption is that diesel is doing something similar although I would not say they are even close to equal. Your friend is lucky he hasn't done any real damage to his engine by now. Diesel does not have the same lubricating properties as engine oil. Just keep up with routine maintenance and you'll be fine.

The diesel is poured in the crankcase, how do you figure letting it run until warmed up is gonna get any diesel onto the valves. Maybe if the valve seals were totally shot. If an engine let's oil into the combustion chamber it's already in bad shape, diesel shouldn't get in there either.

So diesel engines must be super clean all the time?

Doesn't sound like you've thought this through.

I've heard about people using kerosene in the oil fill on motors that don't get reg maintenance for a few miles to break down the sludge and stuff, butseafoam seems a bit safer

I wouldn't use diesel if I was wanting to flush the bottom end, but dumping in 1/2 litre of ATF (high detergent oil) for a couple hundred miles before an oil change helps to clean up any sludge and varnish. Better yet, change oil on time every time with decent oil, and avoid any need to remove sludge and varnish!

That said, a diesel engine thats run with raw fuel in the base is always pretty darn clean inside from the rings down. Accelerated bearing wear from loss of lubricity is a big concern though!

Constructively speaking, thoughts are thoughts. I do know how know what I'm talking about. Except for the time I put engine oil in the coolant tank...

Talking about putting diesel in a diesel motor right? If not then it's not a good idea..
