I had my chrome grille replaced with a color match and I have had a bug deflector on since I bought the truck. (mainly to hide a few chips in the paint at the nose.) well today I was going to use my dr. color chip on those places so I took off the deflector and shut the hood. To my surprise the color matched grille doesn't match the hood what gives.

The problem is Toyota has had the super white for so long that there are many shade variations. When I had my scoop painted at the dealership they had to come out with the super white paint chips to match it up to my truck so no variations like you have. Just because it is the same paint code doesn't mean it will match your paint perfectly plus your paint has probably faded a lil on your truck as well compared to the new grill.

That's better than when I owned a 2010 VW Golf. The car was grey. Got the paint pen, it was almost black. Took it back, got another. Samething with the second one. Dealership couldn't do anything they said. But you think it would close, not a totally didn't color.

Kinda like what bornwildguy was saying ^. When I worked in a body and paint shop. You could take a brand new vehicle off the lot and get a paint code off of it and there could be five plus shades of it in the paint chip book.

I don't know who painted your grill. But , they could've had the code, but not had the proper shade. Or just used some random white.

Normally in a shop, when a vehicle comes in, the proper way is to get the code. Then look it up in the color chip book, see if there's multiple shades, take it to the vehicle, get the closest match out in the daylight. Then after repair or prep, paint and blend. Specially if you have joining panels, if you don't have a close dead on color match you'll need to blend, it's safest to do that either way.
Also sometimes when you can't find a color to match, you can use a paint camera, that will tell you how to mix the paint you need.

I've seen the paint camera go horribly wrong though for some reason too.

The grille might be discoloured from the same thing that fucks up bumpers.

They used a paint camera. used it on the front bumper and the fenders. But not on the hood. I am guessing because I had the deflector on.

    Me too.
Keep in mind under fluorescent lights the color won't be the same as in sun light.

Oh the deflector. Wouldn't have been an issue, they would've just shot it in a different area if needed.

Also by you saying that, I guess you took it to a shop. Since you didn't say that before, for some reason I was thinking you may have order it or got it from another TW member.
If it was me I'd go back to the shop and let them know I wasn't happy with the color match. They could get rid of the chips on your hood and blend the paint to match better, possibly get a closer paint match too.
Any good shop and painter want's to keep a good name. Personally it would bug me to let one go that didn't match.
