Any body shop guys out there that can look at these pics? I moved some furniture today and when standing on my bed I saw this!
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378060559.844394.jpg
Wow! The paint is bubbling off my roof in what looks like 4 racing stripes front to back.
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378060640.926131.jpg
It's bubbling right behind the light.
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378060680.593776.jpg
And the paint has cracked so you can see the rust forming. This pic makes me sick.

Anyone see this before? I use taptalk so searching doesn't work too well.

I am not sure what to do. I have a warranty from the dealer (used) but doubt this is on the list. I'm sure it will be a pretty penny at the body shop. Can this be traced to a windshield issue? Are the side channel rubbers at fault? (No rust yet in the channels.)

Are you sure that is factory paint? Looks like it may have been a re-paint with a poor prep job. Any collision history?

If i found that on the roof of my taco i'd shit a brick. Few of my buddies here have similar trucks to mine and yours, i've never seen anything like that on a roof of one taco yet. Even my buddies 03 has always sat outside and it doesn't have a spec of rust

Can't be too sure. No history of accidents, paint was smooth when I got the truck (I checked it top to bottom) I can't see "layers". Why do you think it looks like a respray?

Curious how it forms straight lines like it had 4 stripes stuck there at some point. I've had the truck 2 years now.

Was it ever parked under a spot where there was a steady drip/leak on the roof? All i can think of.. pretty random pattern for that

Nope. Was a dry garage. I swept the dust out after it was done.

Wait a sec. There was a garage door opener right above my roof during that time. Lube from an opener wouldn't be corrosive though right? This is Weird!

Even after someone fixes the roof. I bet it will look like shit.

Now I definitely will have to get a bad ass roof rack.

    Or a giant sunroof.

Convertible soft top Tacoma? Trying to be in good humor.

If anyone has seen this before, wide open here.

Nothing like that near my roof. My GF reminded me that an empty TV box was on my roof in the Garage when it was put up. Cardboard, label. No chemicals.

I'm opening a bottle of bourbon now.

Have someone strip & rhino line it. A buddy did that after hail damage & it looks great.

First off, this can be fixed, but will require the roof to be repainted. Common causes for paint "cracking" or also called "spiderwebbing" is when the paint/clearcoat dries too fast. If the paint was mixed with a fast drying "thinner" that is designed for cold climates, but was done in a heated booth, or hot area, then when the paint dries it will eventually spider, or crack like this. I doubt that this is factory, since the entire truck would have ended up looking the same.

The pattern that it has definatly suggests some sort of contact exposure. I understand the diy method. Pay someone to fix that.

That can certainly be fixed but like others have said I doubt it's factory paint and someone must have done something to it previously. Maybe vinyl stripes that peeled some paint off at removal time so they sprayed it in between the rubber strips. If done halfway decent nobody would have been the wiser. Being in New England and recently having been in the hunt for another 05-06 I saw some trucks that were absolute toilets but none had rust on the roof.

Its odd how even the damage is to the paint. It looks as though someone did have some sort of stripes or something up there.

My roof is doing the very same thing. These pictures are quite old, the paint is now peeling back along the "scratch lines" and rust is showing through. I was freaked out at first until I noticed a lot of Tacoma's around town here with paint faded rusty roofs so I assume its a common problem. Just get it repainted by a professional and forget about it.

I got a quote from my buddy at work who does all of our used car touch up and panel sprays for $250, I just need to save up the cash........
