When the a/c compressor first kicks on at full engine temp it rattles like hell but then smooths out. Weird part is that it's only really noticeable after I've parked the truck for a few minutes, then restart motor and turn a/c on. Took it in to dealer service dept. and they "claimed" it was compared to another Taco with similar mileage and there was no difference in the sound.

Does anyone know if our a/c compressors just tend to be noisy?

Or am I getting the "it's normal" runaround from the dealer again?

Yep my 2011 has done it about half a dozen times. It has done it while it park (AC turned on within 10 sec's of start-up), and once while driving.

It's a loud clunk and rattle for 1-2 seconds and then goes away. Seems to be a common "thing" with taco's. Not sure it's an indicator of the AC compressor going bad.

Mine grinds on startup on hot days but it has done it for years. It sounds horrible but the compressor seems to work fine.

OK - sounds like it really is a normal sound not to be concerned about. Dealer service dept. told me not to worry about it unless it starts making the noise constantly or the a/c isn't cooling well.

A/C works fine. In fact, it will damn near freeze my hands to the steering wheel when the vents are aimed just right.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I had a similar concern on my '04. 70,xxx miles and the AC made a few LOUD clunks on start up and intermittently. It seemed like it was almost getting worse, but the AC still blew cold.

Well, one day it stopped working and seized up. I ponied up the $1,100 at the dealer to fix it :/ I was told by the mechanic that indeed it was making too much noise because now it is a quiet purr when it kicks on.

Mine does this too, sounds like shit. It doesn't happen too often though so I just ignor it now.

It's probably the clutch hub. If the gap gets too large, it can make the clunking sound when the gap closes. The grinding is the clutch slipping and it's only a matter of time before it won't work. Shimming can help fix this. If it's not the clutch, then it's internal and is NOT normal. Noise is either bearings or fubared internals both of which can result in costly repairs.
