why not do the LED Switchbacks? Keep your DTRL and blinker at much cooler temps? Isn't there a forum vendor for them? I had them in my mustang and were awesome. Extra light at night as well.

Or just kill the DTL? It's free and the blinkers still work. It's bogus that Toyota won't own up to it though.

    Not recommended.

The DRLs are running all the time, and that's a LOT of heat through the resistor.
No electronic flashers are available for the DRL-equipped Tacoma (used to be, but they are NLA).
A couple of members have been successful in opening up the stock flasher and either grinding the "hoop" down, or replacing it with the proper resistor to correct the flash rate, but it's on the switching side of the flasher so it does not overheat.

Go with the LED's but try this out instead, flasher module that has adjustable frequency for use with LED bulbs. Not sure if this particular one works with your year model, but there are quite the variety on eBay. If it doesn't work a little searching, or some slight modification might yield positive results without the resistors. Would have done it on my Jumper led mod but didn't find it until a few weeks ago. Let me know the results if you do this as I might follow suit!

    Won't work.
The DRL Tacoma uses a 12-pin flasher.
Electronic flashers were available a couple of years ago and some sites still list them, but they have been out of stock since 2011.

IMO best thing is to go with some quality LED's and just grind the hoop like Rich said. There's a thread on here showing how to grind the hoop, just grind a little bit at a time and keep testing.

LEDs and resistors. Many have had no problems with doing so. There is a guy on here that sells good quality LEDs

    >.< Where do these extremely useful items disappear to? I'm running the resistors now and have to say that I haven't had any issues with them...Jumper is a great source for LEDs if you decide to go that route.

I just took my 2010 taco with 33,000 for the exact same headlight issue. He told me that Toyota is fully aware of the DTL head light melt problem and said he will run this by his service manager on Monday. He also said Toyota should replace both headlights and install cooler burning bulbs with no problem. I told him I will call Toyota Care in CA and write a detailed complaint to the NHTSA. I did check with the NHTSA on this and found this is already a documented concern by many Tacoma owners. I'll post what the dealer tells me on Monday

It's a shame that it has to come to this. I would bet that less than 5% of Tacoma owners are even aware of this site and look at the many threads on this issue. It is a known problem that (so far) Toyota refuses to warranty (after 36K). It is not a cosmetic problem. It is poor design of the lamp assembly. No matter the miles on the truck if the lens on the inside of your headlamp is melting and a factory bulb is in place Toyota should replace it. That is just my opinion.

Would love to know if there is a new bulb available from Toyota to prevent this from happening. I want to add DRL to mine, and really would prefer the factory solution, but need to solve the heat problem.

Well, Toyota manned up over the weekend and replaced my head lights with updated models. Hopefully the updated head lights will not melt like my original ones did. I am three weeks away before my factory warranty expires. Toyota said that is the only reason they replaced mine with updated head lamps. That is a B.S response from Toyota because this is clearly a manufacture defect and could lead to a fire hazard. For those that got rejected from Toyota, get online and file a complaint with the NHTSA, if more people file a complaint, they will force Toyota to correct the problem with a recall.

    There is not.
The 3157 is slightly lower wattage than the 4157, but it's not much, and when you go to an auto parts store to buy a replacement, the package says "3157/4157"
It's like a 26w vs 28w difference... it's not significant enough to make a difference.

    Hey PPM,

Any chance you could take a look at the DRL bulb and tell us what
    type is in there now?

and btw, from the factory these are Sylvania bulbs...not Toyo or Denso or whatever...

Looks like the actual top filament is still the same distance away though,
but might be worth a try?

I was thinking some more on this and mine is a 2 wire harness.
In that other poll, i guess the 3 wire harness types are not having this problem?

I wonder if Toyota cheaped out on the actual wire gauge on the two wire
harnesses?...I noticed where the wires go into the DRL socket, the
insulation on the wires is looking burnt too.

Does anybody else have the burnt insulation going on?

I had not noticed that. I would think that the heat would be transferred to the glass, and hopefully dissipate more evenly before reaching the plastic inner lens.
