New skid coating

I just got my new RCI skid plate bare steel. What should I do paint it with rattle can or powder coat? Also what are the best of either to use?

 

you can bedline it witha can. thats what i mainly do. i did my bumper and my skid on my polaris ranger

 

Powdercoat will defnitely look good and is durable as well, though it will cost you more than doing DIY bedliner.

 

Primed and rattle canned bedliner on mine. Easy fix when (not if) it needs a touch up.

 

Thanks, where do you get the spray bed liner?

 

You can get it at autozone, lowes, home depot, etc...

Think about this... what is their intended purpose?

Why would you spend a bunch of money with PC or bedliner only to fuck it all up on a rock or whatever. Go with the $4 rattle can

Powdercoating does have a nice rust resistant finish but the first time it gets hit its going to start chipping. Bedliner is pretty good but some brands are definitely going to be better then others. Spray paint is good because if it get scratched or scrapped you can just throw another coat on.

 

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet: Plastidip. Several reasons. It's cheap, easy to apply, forgiving and easy to take off if you don't want or want to redo. Prep is almost not a requirement either unlike spray paint. One day if it's looking a little bit beat up (it will be more durable than spray paint BTW) you can peel up a corner and pull the whole thing off in one sheet & spray it again or just run bare. The rubberized coating stands up better to rocks and stuff on the highway too. Powder coating will be far more durable but if you plan to off road your truck it will still get beat up. It's also much more expensive and you can't remove it or redo it easily. Dip it!

 

I PC'd mine to begin with, and now rattle can the damage. The PC has held exceptionally well, and rust is at a minimum.

 

Been using this (from the rattlecan) with great results! Sticks like a mofo and withstands abuse well.

If it's bare metal, I'd Por 15 it. That stuff is tuff and will not rust beyond the scratch. I've painted frames on resto jobs I've done and it's tough as nails and looks good too.

Por 15 is a bit difficult to work with, but the results are worth it.

x2. i got some rustoleum bed liner is like $6 a can at lowes. and its a 15oz can.

 

good to know. i saw it at napa as well but it was a few $$ more. idk why but it was. i need to find the time(that works with the weather) and bed line my rear bumper. plasti dip only lasted about a year.
