painting engine cover thread #723682389

So i started painting my engine cover. I taped off the toyota sign and the V6 and such.. but i think i messed up royally.. Lemme show you:



What i did was when i was taping off the sign and using a razor blade, i pressed down way too hard. here's what i have so far:



It only has a few coats of paint on it, and more will come tomorrow (with clearcoat..) BUT question... Did i F up bad? Is there anything i can do now, while in process of painting, and make it come out OK? Anyone else do this and come out OK?

 

sand it and put a few more coats on it maybe it will fill in the cut marks

 

Good idea. I sanded it softly and re-taped some of the areas i accidentally hit with the sand paper.. i think it will work out.. i'll see tomorrow

I think it looks awesome. I know i'm obviously the only one interested in this thread BUT i did a damn good job in spite of messing up. Yay me i'm awesome AND amazing.

 

I like it & your last couple posts & thread title made me laugh. Great recovery on the razor marks. The cover looks good

Fusion it is. I liked the red.. so i used the whole can.... Then shot it with about a half a can of clear.. Thanks for the comments guys/gals =) It makes me feel whole again!

Un...I am painting my matrix cover right now, what clear coat did you use? And when I was at Lowes this morning, I just bought some satin red that really matches my car color, but the guy said that with all of the heat that I can anticipate some cracking and peeling, any suggestions? Quick reply would be great, I'm getting ready to put another coat on.

 

lets see.. i used high temp gloss.. i found it at home depot

 

Great, thanks I will pick some up tomorrow, is it going to be alright to run my car without that cover? My wife is freaking out that I havent put it back on yet.

 

You'll be just fine. It really does nothing other than dress up the engine compartment.

 

The fire blanket is built into the cover... but as long as your engine doesn't catch on fire *knocks on wood*

 

I must've been out of service that day, the end result is great. Definitely matches. lol

 

yeah it doesnt get hot whatsoever. I didnt bother using high temp paint and it still looks great. I drove it for a good 20 miles in 75 degree temperature before parking it, opening the hood and taking the cover out.. and it was only slightly warm

Appreciate it guys, glad that the thing worked out, I remember being there and you had just applied the first coat. I'm doing my Tacoma Silver but only the outer half, my Matrix I did red with the letters black, once I look at it tomorrow I will see how good of a taping job I did and spray it with some clear coat. I found some Toyota valve stem covers looking to getting some of those, and wanted to get with you Un about the dome light map light mod, I am going to get some LED lights and want to do that mod.
