I'd rather have the spare tire then having more performance. Performance won't help you in the middle of nowhere, having a flat without the spare. See how fast you can go on three tires.

A spare tire is better than a full size or a 40".

Yeah, this sounds about right. It's only about 200-300lbs heavier and there is extra resistance from the t-case now as well, but I can't imagine the difference in acceleration between the Prerunner and 4wd is even noticable in the seat...

Besides the fastest 1/4 mile 2nd gen out there is a 4wd DCSB auto. haha

A had a used car long ago and I never checked if it had a spare. I got a flat outside of my house and I went to use the "so called" spare and it wasn't there. A tow was in my future that day. Now any vehicle that I have I make sure that it has a full size spare, none of this emergency doughnut spare crap.

I bought my 2wd about 3 weeks ago... I always wanted a 4wd, but against my better judgment I got the prerunner. I decided to rectify that mistake.

And to the person that said it would be hard to notice - I can't tell you if the 4wd components are what is making the difference but I can say with utmost certainty that this truck is slower than both my prerunner was, and also the 2wd limited I test drove. Didn't get to test drive another 4wd to see how it compared. Something to note, this engine makes a very pronounced ticking noise and also a slight whine, for a lack of a better word. Didn't hear that in my other truck, and the ticking was much less pronounced also.

Not sure if that means anything, but I figured I'd throw it it there. :)

Most Tacoma's tick regardless if you have a 2wd or 4wd.

My brother just took his spare off. but made a rack for three large batteries. So less weight in the front I guess!

Lift it and get bigger tires. You'll want to drive slow all the time to make up for lost MPG :D
These days I have no need for speed...

Were these vehicles brand new or used? I haven't actually tested between the two, but just from the physics of it, I can't imagine you could feel a difference, because it should be pretty small.

All three were brand new. I got my prerunner with 19 miles on it, the limited I test drove had 6, and the truck I have now I took possession of with 4 miles on it.

Another dumb question I guess, do they get smoother after the break in?
