Ugh, steering wheel shake in brand new TRD sport?

As the title states, my DCSB trd sport 4x4 has pretty significant steering wheel shake from around 60 to 75mph. It has about 30 miles on it now. I haven't noticed it because I haven't had a chance to get it up to highway speeds until this morning.

This is pretty frustrating on a truck with less than 50 miles on it. Are there some things I can check myself to see if it can be fixed? I really don't want to have to sit at a dealership while they try and figure it out. Figured I'd mention, it also pulls to the left at those speeds, but slow down and it stops.

I've been making noob threads like crazy, so I figured I'd thank you in advance.

Sounds like tire balance an alignment. I also just bought a new DCLB TRD sport a week ago. Mine drives fine, no vibrations or pulling.

Get your tires balanced and aligned that should fix it.

    None, just got from dealer
My advise would be go back to the dealer. It is very likely that it will be tire balance as others said, but you never know and you would be a lot safer taking it back to the dealer. Good luck!

Agreed. Definitely sounds like a tire balance issue. 1/4 oz or 1/4 inch makes a big difference, even on big tires. Might as well have them check the alignment while you're in there (it wouldn't make your wheel shake, but it's a brand new truck, so what the hell)

Well that's frustrating. Guess when I get a chance I'm headed to the stealership.

I did buy the 100k warranty for this truck, so that's a comfort. I really hope I don't end up being one of the few that can't seem to get this taken care of.

Could be a dealer rebellion since so many and so widespread. They are responsible for tire pressure and balance, along with a whole checklist of over a hundred items. Stuff like this happens when they are unhappy with a manufacturer to drive the initial satisfaction numbers down. It serves as a reminder that the manufacturers need the dealerships.

^Tire pressure I can understand, but is the dealer required to check tire balance as part of PDI? That would involve unmounting each wheel and putting it on the balancing machine.

@DavisBladeWorks: Go to the dealer and tell them about the steering wheel shake. Ask a mechanic to come along for a ride if needed. Let them decide on what to fix. Do not go in asking for a tire balance or alignment as those are usually non-warranty maintenance items. I'm assuming you didn't have this problem with the TRD Off Road you traded in?

    Thanks for the advice.

The off road didn't shake at all, but it did pull to the left. I though the pull was annoying, but the shaking is unbearable. Since I'm a lucky person this truck pulls and shakes. Lol

I am guessing your test drive was about like mine, a quick stroll around the block, no highway lol. Luckily I have no pulling or vibrations whatsoever.

Yep. I've seen enough to make me not want to drop $30K on a new truck. I read one where the guy took it in, they tried tires, among other things with no luck. Dealer told him that was normal. Seems like it's just luck of the draw wether someone's does it or not. Along with the engine knock issue, auto trans issue, ever going suspension issue, etc....

Yes, and they refused to let me take it to the highway. A bunch of BS. They said it's to keep the miles down, which I understand, but it's not like I wanted to take it on a leisurely 30 mile stroll down the interstate.

Not sure about you, but when I bought my truck, the exact vehicle was in storage off site. The dealer had a TRD Sport DCLB parked in the front, so I test drove that one. Build quality turned out to be similar - same amount of squeaks and rattles, and neither had steering issues.

No my truck was available on the lot, the dealer just had me do a quick testdrive through a few intersections that did a loop around the backside of the dealership before returning back to the main road where I promptly turned back into the lot. Steering felt normal and turned out to be that way thankfully. Sometimes you won't feel that stuff unless you get up to speed on the highway. Maybe it is an Atlanta thing and dealers are scared of a testdrive going wrong in the traffic?

The steering wheels shake a little on these trucks at highway speeds, nothing new. If it's a pretty moderate to severe shake, you need your wheels checked for alignment and balancing, also try 4 wheel drive at 55 mph and see if there is a difference, if so, get the ECGS bushing replacement, also check tire pressures at 29 psi cold.
