I am in the midst of changing the rear-end gear oil on my 4wd Tacoma. The manual spec says 4WD models and PreRunner 3.12 qt. (2.95 L, 2.60 Imp.qt.)

I am up to about 3.5 quarts, and it still hasn't spilled out of the fill port yet.

Should I follow the spec of 3.12, or fill until it spills out?

I did jack the car to one side, and then the other to make sure the old oil drained from the axle housing. Maybe that would account for it?

So, fill port or Toyota spec?

Slight incline, facing down hill, but not a half-quart's worth :)

    Your's is a 2nd gen, right?

Just changed mine at 38k. Put in 3.10ish qts and called it a day. It didn't spill out but im not worried about it. I put my finger in there and could immediately feel fluid.

I don't think you could go wrong either way. 3.5 in or a little more until it flows out. It's probably right there almost to the overflow anyway. Even if you went over a bit due to a slight incline, it's not going to be enough to harm anything. Ultimately it has to be your call and what you're comfortable with.
