The FXR kit is a very involved installation.
The D2S and H1 are pretty "plug and play"
I like the D2S because it is an industry-standard bulb and I'll be able to get replacements even if TRS goes out of business.

5000k won't be too bad, you don't want to go hotter. I upgraded to the Philips which are the same 4300k burners used by auto manufacturers. I've had mine in for almost a year and I've been extremely happy with them, other than the high beam sticking on the passenger side (the fix is described in a couple of threads here).

Red or blue halos are going to be a ticket. Stick with white, or leave them off when on the road. I don't think TRS offers red.

    You want the H4 harness.

The D2S has multiple ballast options. Whats the difference? Any recommendations? I am assuming the bulb has to match the ballast?

    -Matsushita Gen V $40

Your asking lots of good questions. I just went with the simplest (Morimoto mini) and it truly is plug n play. The D2S is just a bit more involved but I hear its simple as well. I think with the D2S you have to do a little more adjusting? I could be wrong. You should find out the difference and see what the other options give you to see if its worth the extra work of the FXR

The ballasts should match the bulb so if you have the standard 35W bulbs, you can use any of the ballasts you listed except the 5Five. Denso and Matsushita are higher, OEM quality ballasts but the Mormimoto ballasts have worked fine for me.

None of these retrofits are plug and play, they all require you to tear apart the headlight and attach the projector. D2S and H1 projectors both attach the same way, they rear of the projector gets a silicone washer and the threaded part goes through the headlight reflector bowl and is secured using a lock nut. H1 and D2S projectors are the same level of difficulty and require the same amount of adjusting.

If you're considering the FX-R, check out HIDPlanet and look at the output shots of the D2S, H1 and FX-R projectors. Unless you want the look of a larger projector or the ability to run 55W bulbs, the H1's will come damn close to the FX-R's and the D2S's aren't far behind. For the additional work the FX-R's take to mount, I don't think they're worth it for the minimal gains you get.

I've PM'ed with the guys from ModifyStreet and they do retrofit them and they will do it to your liking as well. From what they said the projectors are retrofitsource and the HIDs are generic eBay kits, as far as the housing I do not know. I will be ordering mine from them in the future, just needs funds lol

It's just the cord length. Standard length cords are fine. The long cords would be nice if you don't have room to mount the ballast close to where the bulbs go but the Tacoma engine bay is fairly open up by the headlights.

Stay away from the 5Five. That's a 55w ballast. The heat will melt the H1 projectors, and some have reported issues with the D2S... and they're really too bright. 35w is industry standard.

The Denso and Matsushita are OEM type, and I believe not water resistant. The straight Morimoto 3Five is a good unit.
Long cord allows it to be mounted farther away from the housing, but my experience with using HID in scuba is a longer cord can lead to issues striking in cold weather, and as the bulb gets older.

D2S and Mini-H1 are the same installation procedure.

Well, plug n play after the projectors are installed, But that goes without saying when talking about TRS retro fits and the convo we've had throughout this thread.
As for the install process of the D2S compared to H1 I too have heard and read they are similar but the reason I choose H1 was because many people commented it was the easiest of the TRS retrofits (yes it was easy) and the light output is very good. If Rich and Pugga have the D2S lights then I'm sure they can give better info on how that install process goes.

I know what you meant, just clarifying for someone who stumbles upon this thread just passing through. Some of the TRS kits truely are plug and play since they are upgrades to existing projector headlights.

I had a set of H1s, but I chose them based on light output pictures. I felt that the H1 had a wider pattern and were a bit brighter where as the D2S wasn't quite as wide but had more even light distribution.

So I installed everything and have one issue. The high beam on the passenger side is not working. I tested it before I installed it and it worked fine. Any thoughts?

The plug that connected to stock headlight on the driver side plugs into the wiring harness which controls the high beams. Should identical plug on the passenger side be plugged into anything? That is the only plug I have that is not plugged into anything.

No the passenger headlight bulb socket has not use. If your high beams aren't working check your connector. I had that issue and one of the tabs inside the plug were bent.
