Just had a wicked flow muffler installed and it sounds like crap and is obnoxiously loud can someone please tell which one I need. Should I get a 18in magnaflow XL or a dynomax or something else.

Magnaflow. But since you already have a modified pipe, might as well work with what you have. Have you tried adding a resonator or 2?

I ran a Magnaflow for about a week. It sounded nice and mellow but it resonated at 2,000rpm where is right where my 2.7 runs the most. I also lost some low end torque by opening up the exhaust, so I took it off and went back to stock.

You know, the stock exhaust is actually pretty good as both the 2.7 and 4.0 use the same diameter mandrel bent tubing.

I did chop my pipe behind the rear axle just because I think it looks better, and it's just as quiet as before.

Unless you absolutely have to make more noise I don't see any issue with the stock exhaust on these trucks. It's not like the 22re days where the stock pipe diameter was under 2 inches and the mufflers were super-restrictive. Of course I'm also 40 and have learned that the attention you attract with a loud exhaust is typically the kind you don't want.

Im a big fan of aero turbine. Don't know about the 4 cyl sound but the 4.0 sounds awesome.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know the 2.7 had the same pipe size as the 4.0. I'm going back to stock, I can't live with the noise or loss in power.

    +1

On a V8 or a V-Twin? Ya... you can get a nice, healthy, throaty sound that doesn't attract the wrong kind of attention.
4-banger and even the V6? Not so much. The 4 banger is going to sound like a pissed off go-cart, and I've heard more than a few Tacoma and Tundra V6 trucks that really sound bad.

Yeah, Toyota is notorious for using the same parts. It's one thing I really like about a company... frugality.

I took the short shifter and knob out of my 1996 Tacoma when I sold it, and it fit perfectly in my 2012 Tacoma! This is using the same part for 17 years!

That was the stock knob on your '96?
The one in my '94 looked nothing like that.

1994 is pre Tacoma. They're different and use 4 bolts to attach. I also had one of those on my 1988.

I had chopped the 1996 lever short and put a 1960's era Hurst Cue Ball knob on it. That's why I wanted to keep it. I like short levers because they automatically shorten the throw, and didn't want to go through all the time and trouble cutting another one short and grinding the end down to fit a knob.

The 1996 lever went straight on my 2012, and I put the longer 2012 lever with the new 1996 knob I originally took off when I bought the truck new.

Even though it was just a construction work truck, I kept seat covers on it for 17 years. That's why the upholstery looks brand new.

That short shifter must have looked awesome in that '96.

Yeah, it did... even kept a couple pics of it. :)

It makes my new truck feel just like the old one. I'm pretty sure the transmissions are identical. ;)
