The other option is to get a Gentex mirror that has a separate temperature sensor and wire it in. I believe that is what I am going to end up with.

Ok, thanks. There is a Gentex dealer about 30 miles from me. When I get my truck I will take to them and get a quote, and hopefully info on what needs to be done. It would be a simple easy install if the sensor is wired to the harness near the mirror. If not, them more complicated. I drive in the mountains a lot and really rely on having that temp readout so I know if the roads are icy.

Here's a genuine OEM parts dealer if you care to look up parts and prices: http://www.toyotapartscheap.com/

I was able to find '12 Highlander (my current ride) RV mirror with compass & dim = $656.00, w/o compass = $570.00. An expensive bell/whistle if it works in the Taco! Both items DO NOT come with TEMP display.

Disclaimer: I'm on here researching my next Toyota...it could possibly be a Tacoma. As to the cab type and whether SR5, Sport, or Off Road package the jury is out. ;)

Score a 341 off ebay before they are gone completely.........auto-dimming/compass/temp/homelink/maplight. Do backup cam on stereo instead of mirror. Won't be any $500 either, paid 200 shipped with wiring kit with amber display to match dash.

T@co, how difficult is the install on the temp probe, especially the sensor wiring to the mirror? I turn a decent wrench, but my down fall is trim.

Replying to post inquiring if 2013 tacos have homelink.....mine does not, it is the SR5 pkg.........in fact i'm baffled by the 13 taco......we have an 05 camry xle, it has homelink as well as the computer thing that keeps track of accumulative MPG, instant MPG, lasped time, milage remaining in fuel tank, etc. the 13 taco has none of these features.......one would think that the features of a $22,000 7 yr old camry would be fairly standard on a $30610 pickup........my taco also has no "bed light" intregrated into the high third brake lite assembly.....my 1973 Ford F-150 even had that............

The wiring is quite simple...one wire thru firewall grommet for temp sensor routed to middle of grill area. I used 2 add-a-circuit things in the fuse box in rr dr locks and rr pwr window fuses for the 2 pwr feeds since I have none of that in a regular cab & a ground. That's it. Routing the wiring accross the front edge of the headliner is piece of cake and removing the grab handle and pillar trim to get wiring harness down under the dash to fuse panel area is also very simple. 2 screw covers on grab handle and 2 screws and it's off. The pillar trim then just pops off with a tug. I removed the visor just to be able to make it easier to tuck wiring in up there on the truck but did not do that wiring up the new mirror on the wife's RAV4 so that is kinda optional. Very easy job done in hour or less taking time to feel your way thru it the first time and route wiring all nice and neat thru the harness brackets under the hood. Have no fear............

Just a quick update for the people that were wondering where the ambient sensor wiring went to.

I took several things apart and verified that the two wires coming from the temp sensor go to the A/C Amplifier (same as the '13 Tacomas as seen in the wiring diagram)

In the 2013's, the 'ambient temperature' signal comes from the ambient sensor (mounted on the grill), passes through the A14 A/C amplifier (behind the glove box,) comes out of Pin 27 (Yellow wire) and ends up in the rear view mirror.

The issue for us, 2014 owners, is that there's no yellow wire coming out of pin 27 from the A/C amp (or I didn't find it at least)

So I would imagine the possible solutions (if you want temp reading) are to either mount a completely separated temp sensor with a compatible mirror or to try to add that wire to the A14 A/C amp connector and route it to the mirror (that's if the '13 and '14' Tacomas share the same A/C amp, the signal is present and in the same format -digital, voltage proportional to temp, etc.)

I'm not sure if this subject was discussed previously but that's what I found and I wanted to share it. I hope it helps.

My 2014 Access Cab has three wires in the rear view mirror harness that was tucked in the headliner: Red=12V (unswitched), Grn=12V (acc), Wht w/Blk Stripe=Gnd

Just finished a CIPA 36500 install on my 2014 Access Cab.

The hardest part was getting the wire for the temp probe punched through the firewall. It would have been a lot easier had I known at the start that there is an open port (apparently for user installs) about 1/4" in diameter under the main firewall wiring harness grommet. What you have to do is reach under the main harness (from the engine side) and find a small nipple about 1" to 2" long at the 6 O'Clock position. Using it is like opening a tube of caulk for a calking gun (except this is rubber instead of plastic). Just cut-off the sealed tip. It stretches quite easily. I grabbed it with my left hand, pulled it out where I could get an eye on it, you should see a small rib about 1/4" from the tip (which is apparently a "cut here" guide), and then used a pair of dikes with my right hand to cut it off. You can then push through a two conductor cable (easily) in the exposed hole and it'll pop out inside the cab under the main engine cable harness gromet behind the kick panel.

Since there was an unused source of power right there in the headliner I didn't bother running the power and ground wires down the pillar and then find a place to tap power. I cut the 36500's power cable about 12" from the connector, and cut the unused OEM rearview cable (pulled from the headliner) about an inch from it's connector and spliced the black/blue cable from the 36500 to Grn (12V Acc) of the OEM cable, and solid black cable from the 36500 to White with Black stripe (Gnd) from the OEM cable.

So far (which isn't very much) I'm pretty happy with it. Auto-dim, compass, outside temperature (which is what I really wanted), and map lights for $159 and free shipping.

I've been inquiring further about this situation. Trying to get higher and higher ups to address it. It sounds like something is in the works, some type of provision or compensation. I'll know more within a day or two.

Is there an aftermarket quality digital compass unit available for purchase? I'm a country boy, but when I drive into a large city I have no sense of direction. Still can't believe that my 2014 TRD Sport has no Compass or Outside Temp Display. When I built the truck at the Toyota Site looked like they were a normal feature. 2014 brochure also states "COMPASS". I'd be fine without the 110v power outlet and given the Compass and Temp units. The power outlet means nothing to me, the extra storage compartment would have also been a plus.

This thread got me all paranoid on my preordered Taco...

For any 2014 SR5 customers, I was assured by my dealer that the SR5 "SL" package includes the autodimmer +homelink.

In a week I'll find out if this is true. :annoyed:

Just picked mine up last night. Auto-dimming mirror/compass/temp not added. Sales manager pulled up the options on his computer linked to toyota and it was not offered (according to him). Real nice truck, but they cut corners on some things which should be standard equipment. I will post more later.

My '14 TRD Sport has home link and auto dimming as well as compass. No temp guage anywhere(Canadian version - no sure if there is a difference). I did not add any additional options to the TRD sport.

Well that's a bummer...good thing I wrote it down on the order sheet that it must be included, had the dealer sign it, and we both have copies. Guess they will just have to put it in then! hehe
