Don't think I have seen a Tacoma recently with rusted doors, fenders etc. When I'm under mine I remove the spare and spray ever thing in sight backing plates diff housing, springs, bolts, trailer hitch and the back of the bumper some times the exhaust (that does some stink). Hard under coat as far as I have seen really does not work well it creaks does not get where you really need it the FF is a mist and gets into places that others don't I can't comment on the oil guard but it sounds pretty much like the same thing.

I'm between Watertown & Syracuse NY, just off Tug Hill, right in the lake effect snow belt. Just bought my 2011, and I'm giving fluid film a try. Bought a case of aerosol cans and an extension wand, and I'm going to do my truck next weekend and my wife's Rav4 the weekend after.

I hope it's worth the effort. All we have around here is Ziebart, and I'm not impressed with the local franchise.

I bought my 2009 in Jan. 2009 and Toyota told me to undercoat it as soon as I got it.Picked the truck up at 1 PM and Rust Check it at 1:15.

Yeah really, you don't have to worry about the doors on these things, just piece of mind.

The frame is another thing, I understand some front portions of the frame are three layers of steel and are prone to rust. The other area of concern is beside the catalytic converter. One guy on here from Kentucky, the dealer ship wouldn't let him leave, the rust damage on his 06 was so bad.

Zeibart may be an option if the truck is brand new, but when I contacted them here in Rochester I was quoted around $800. For me its more cost effective to go with Fluid Film.

I had an 80 SR5 2wd it was undercoated with the zeibart type stuff I stopped driving it when it got to the point I thought it was going to break in half still proudly sporting the rust proof sticker on the back window. It had holes in the door frame, holes in the doors and holes that I'm not sure went any where and the overall results were about the same as if they had sprayed salt water inside.

I don't like working on trucks that are undercoated, they spray that crap everywhere. I just keep an eye on my frame and touch up with rustoleum hammertone as neccessary. No road salt here like NY but I do drive on the beach often.

You are right it is messy but I would rather it be oily with parts I can remove then rusty.

I'm in Florida with my 2012 Tacoma and my wife's 2007 Lexus SUV. We're about to move to Montana and wondering about this myself. Since they're both Florida vehicles, they are pretty clean underneath. But I am trying to determine if I should coat/protect them before our first winter up there or not.

I applied fluid film to my new taco back in june 2nd week after I bought it. Any oil undercoating will save your truck many many years and increase value. My 03 Silverado still looks new, not even surface rust on springs or anywhere! Do it every year.

There's a Mazda dealership in my neck of the woods that does Fluid Film for $99-139 depending on the size of the vehicle. They spray it on hot and they are VERY thorough. My 2005 wrangler still looks like it just came out of the showroom with 111k miles and 8 Hew Hampshire winters under its belt so far. They've made a believer out of me.

How many spray cans of fluid film does it take to do the underside of a Tacoma?

A lot of people say 3-4. I used almost 6 full cans, and I don't feel like I over applied it at all. :notsure:

For the cost, fluid film is the way to go. It can get messy, so wear shop coveralls or nasty clothes. This stuff once applied, migrates a couple inches too and it sticks pretty well. It's an easy application because you just spray everything on the undercarraige, minus the exhaust. It sounds like an annual application but so what, especially if you like monkeying around underneath a truck. Do it!

Had my 09 undercoated by Ziebart in Binghamton NY a week after I bought it. Cost me 600 I wont ever do it again the frame had rust spots all over it the next year. I wash my truck during the winter at lease once a week. I called Ziebart they told me that you have to have it redone once a year. Now in the summer I go under the truck and wire brush any surface rust I can find spray it with Rustoleum rust converter (dries to a black primer) then hit everything with Fluid Film so far so good the rust has pretty much stopped in 3 or so years. Drop your front skid and be prepared to get sick to your stomach that area is a rust magnet.

Fluid film is a great product especially if you want salt and grime as physically close to your frame as possible...

Seriously though, FF is garbage, it's a mess, it will collect road grime and keep it stuck to your frame. Much better off using an undercoating and keeping it clean.
