What does the "converter" that comes after 7 pin connector mean? I'm thinking it is the 4 pin adapter. My dealer says, no but I was on intellichoice's site and they are saying that it comes with the V/6 tow package. I can't find it on Toyota's site though. Thanks for the help.

Yep that's it. Do you know if it comes with the tow package?

Mine didn't come with one....until I asked the dealership for one...they found one for me. But no, not usually included.

There is a converter in the wiring it allows you to use trailer lighting that only has one bulb it combines the signal lights and the brake light to allow this. The truck has separate turn and stop lights the trailer doesn't. It is part of the tow package.

On my 07's window sticker under V6 Tow Package it said "7-pin Connector w/Converter". I had to ask for the converter though... wasn't in the truck.

Thanks for the help. Below is what Intellichoice had on their site. Might be bad info. I emailed them to let them know.

With out the converter the trailer signal/stop lights will not work that kind of makes the 7 pin useless.

That sounds about right! Probably go with aftermarket. I wish I had noticed this before I signed!

Please excuse my ignorance here. Maineah says it is in the wiring. So when you say converter Im assuming your talking about a separate piece?

I think the confusion is with wording the 7 to 4 pin is an adapter you can buy them most any where the converter is a device that any car/truck with separate brake/signal lights has to have in order for the trailer lights to work. If it is a factory option it will be part of the package if you buy aftermarket stuff it will have to be installed. The wiring kits they sell for various stuff often has them with the wiring harness you buy for the truck. The only thing I know of that comes with the tow package uninstalled is the brake controller wiring harness because the brake controllers come without a connector and have to be wired for each vehicle.

I made the dealership include a 7 to 4 pin adapter. The spec sheet calls out a "7 pin connector w/ converter" and I took that to mean a 7 to 4 adapter. There is also supposed to be a little antenna wrench in the glove box that lets you remove the antenna for a car wash. Made them give me that too. Every picture of the trailer hitch shows a receiver plug, made them give me that as well. For the money you shuck out for one of these trucks, I hate to be nickel and dimed. The dealer was great about it and we are getting along well.

Ir's not a converter but it was nice of them to give you one. They did not give me one or the little wrench either now I feel mistreated.

The Tundra has the 4-pin built into the 7-pin connector.
The Tacoma is like the 1st Gen Tundra... just has a 7-pin.
The trailer lights will work just fine if the trailer is equipped with a 7-pin connector.

The 7-pin is used on larger trailers and allows for the towing vehicle to charge trailer batteries and to operate electric trailer brakes.
The adapter is needed to use a trailer that has only the basic lighting. The adapter is exactly as pictured in the Toyota link above, and plugs into the 7-pin connector.
That adapter is available at Lowes or Home Depot for about $10
