I just purchased a 2013 tacoma tx pro in metallic silver. It is double cab, short bed. The sticker said i should receive at least 16 miles in the city and up to 20 on the highway. I picked my truck up last Sunday, i have driven it a total of 232 miles and i am between halfway of a quarter tank and empty. I am betting i end up with about 250-255 when the fuel light comes on. I guess my concern is that this is only adding up to be about 12 mpg. I do not drive on the highway or interstate at all. I work about 3 miles from my home and i do not travel more than about 10-12 miles per day on average.... the mileage above is skewed somewhat because of the trip from the dealership twice which is about 20 miles away interstate. I travel the speed limit or about 5 miles over and do not gun the engine or race the rpms..... anyone have any ideas how to get closer to that 15-16 mpg mark that i should be getting? Thanks for all your advice.

Let the truck break in and wait until you have a little mileage on it. Also calculate your gas mileage and see what you are getting. When you fill up you will probably get better mileage than 12. But short trips in the city are the worst for gas mileage becuase by the time your engine is up to operating temp your trip is almost over.

Give it some time and break it in. I have about 6000 miles on mine now and I will see 16-17 through town and 21-22 on the highway. There are a lot of variables that can influence your gas mileage (AC, stop and go, altitude, government shutdown, you know...) so I wouldn't be pay too much attention to it right now. Go through a couple of tanks, let the engine break in, and log the mileage. Until then, enjoy the new truck!

I have almost 10k miles on my '13 V6 and it wasn't until about 6 or 7k miles that my mileage really started to get somewhere I was happy with. But don't expect it to be a Prius, it's a big 4.0L V6.

Somewhere around 7-10k change the differential oil over to synthetic; it makes a big difference.

If you're able to and up to it, I recommend riding a bicycle or walking to work. I live a mile from work and walk instead of driving. It takes a little longer to get there but I like to think it burns some calories and I really like to walk around feeling smugger than those people that drive hybrids and bring their own bags to the grocery store. If I drove to work each day, I'm sure my mpg's would be in the crapper because short drives hurt mpg's.

Damn, 232 miles in and already complaining about MPGs  Let the truck break in a bit, it'll get better.

Didn't notice a bit of difference when I changed to synthetic from dino oil... :notsure:

Ok, I'll give it a few fill ups.... I was just disturbed and was like wth.... I can handle the 16-17....but 12 is a bit rediculous. That makes for a huge difference in the car I traded for my tacoma.

Also the fuel gauge isn't that accurate. At "half a tank" I am usually at around 150 miles and when the light comes on, I am usually around 280-290. But when the light comes on I still have around 5 gallons in the tank. I was on a road trip to colorado and missed the last gas station for 70 miles and my light was on. I made it to the next gas station with my gauge at the "e" not the line but the actual "e". when I filled up I was pleasently surprised to still have 2 gallons left. So long story short, definitely wait until you fill up to determine how much gas you have actually used and not how much the gauge reads.

I actually do pretty good with MPG. I'm hanging right around 20 MPG, not too much of a Masshole foot

Definitely give it time to break in, new engines will use a little more fuel and a little bit of oil until they are broken in. Just like someone else posted, the short trips are harder on your gas mileage since the engine doesn't really get up to operating temp or is just getting to it by the time you shut it down. My 2013 double cab is averaging around 18 for the moment with a 17 mile ride to and from my dealership. Don't loose faith, it will get better. Enjoy your ride, its an awesome truck!

I have just over 7K on my '13 DCSB Taco OR and I'm getting 16mpg average...and most of that is highway driving...
I have always had an issue with a lead foot, though, so I'm assuming this is 100% my fault ;)
