I skip gears randomly, sometimes ill only do 1-3-5 or 1-2-3-6 all depends really what the speed limit on the road is and how fast I'm trying to get somewhere

i remember it being in a few episodes where they made that reference lol i forgot what car it was but they were talking about how pointless the 5th gear was because it was so short and that 6th or top gear was better

Clarkson doesn't shift either. You can skip to 1:30 for proof.

Right! They could have easily made 6th 800rpm deeper. If you need to go up a big bill shift into fifth. And reverse. Gosh first few weeks of driving the truck i'd almost stall out backing up. It's way to deep. But to answer the op's question. I rarely skip gears. I've heard it's a littler harder on the synchros. So I just got in the habit of row, row, row your gears

Did you change from 4 to 6 a little slower? You rev higher on gear 4 then if you quickly put it to gear 6 it'll drop rpm.

You gotta match the transmission speed (rpm) with driveline speed (speedometer) brah driving manual 101 come'on. down and up shifting.

So basically you shouldn't skip a gear up shifting. Downshifting you skip a gear from 4 to 2 for example but you have to rev match.

Did the road all of the sudden go downhill fast that you need to match to gear 6 while you're trying to shift or what heh

I also would skip 5th 80% of the time. When I got my 285's I still skipped 5th some but not as much. After looking at my fuel mileage, I getting better fuel mileage using all 6. I'm sure because if the weight of the new tires.

I shift around 1500 RPM and use 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th for normal driving.

efficiency is best when the motor operates at a certain rpm with minimal load. skipping gears increases load and rpm fluctuation.

    I skip gears when:

im in 4lo on a trail and run into an easy section. might go 3, 5, 6 to catch up with peeps

merging onto the freeway with fast traffic. I use 4th to get me up to speed and reach over to 6th once im all comfy in my lane.

Who needs 6th gear? I mean, I had a 6 speed and got rid of it then got an auto. Goes just as fast and gets way better gas mileage. :burnrubber:

:D In a way, I kind of miss my 6 speed. I just couldn't take the gas mileage.

I remember those good ol' days. Hardly ever used 5th or 3rd unless I was in town. It was perfectly happy as a 4 speed.

Now I use all 5. It's nice when the gear spacing makes sense! That, and if I want the truck to speed up I actually have to play with the gearbox. No being lazy and relying on mountains of torque in 6th anymore. I do kind of miss that.

I like not fearing freeway costs anymore. Sure, the four cyl saves a little gas on my commute ($25/mo), but if I cross the state doing 70 I can get 22-23 instead of 14-16 mpg I used to.
