Greetings, I am new here and thinking of buying a new regular cab 4x4. My question is what are the pros and cons of a stick shift or an automatic ?

I had a auto in my 06 and I have a m6 in this one and I hate it.

The auto gets better mileage and its stronger. . The manuals clutch is very easy to slip...like ridiculously easy.

It comes down to what you prefer to drive, i've driven both standard and auto tacomas and i prefer the auto. When you run into someone who loves to drive stick they will always want to drive stick.. it's just one of those things

140k miles and due for a clutch.

It's all personal preference...I'm young so I enjoy the manual :)

hes looking at a reg cab which has a 5sp manual which is actually pretty good.

an auto with the 4 banger can be quite a dog

This. The 6m in the taco is far from the best transmision I've drove. Par at best. Doesn't shift too smooth. You have to shift slow. Long throws. The clutch realses at a poor time. And the clutch isn't the best. But I love standard. Wouldn't drive anything else. So it was a no brainer for me. It had to be stick

I would go with the manual, but I am biased. My truck is my first vehicle I've ever owned and I love the 5speed.

    Manual. 4 cylinder's + automatics = terrible.

Your best bet is to test drive both and then decide. It really comes down to personal preference and type of driving conditions you routinely encounter.

Debating the merits of auto vs manual transmission on here opens a HUGE can of worms and has been previously discussed to death. Do a search...

Its is a truck transmission, every manual pickup or SUV I've driven has long throws. The clutch release is pretty easy in my opinion. I came from driving a 2002 325i 5 speed and find this tranny just as smooth if not smoother the the BMW's. I've fallen in love with the m6 but it really depends if u like driving stick or not.

Thanks for all the input. I will test drive the stick. I have already test drove an automatic. Its not bad, but I am coming out of a Chevy s-10 that I have been in for 12 years....and its a 5 speed manual. I do like the stick, just wanted to make sure there weren't any major issues with one or the other. Thanks so much. I will keep you posted.

They're both solid trannys. So if you like Manual go with the M6. But if your reason for going with that is durability and mpg. Don't bother

the RC comes with the 4cyl which comes with a 5spd manual trans, not the 6 spd.

I'd go with the manual, auto+4banger sucks.

Depends on what you are going to do with it but ultimately a matter of preference.

Autos are better at starting up a boat ramp with a heavy trailer and some would argue that autos are easier for climbing over rocks and ledges. They are also better in stop start gridlock traffic.

Manuals are more fun to drive. You steer an auto, you drive a standard. :burnrubber:

I drive an auto but would love to try a standard next time.

 I agree ... but I'm old (ish) so I enjoy the manual. :D Never owned a truck that was auto, from my first 1973 Ford, to my 1981 Toyota SR5, to my current 2007 SR5 4x4 5spd 4cyl. Went 24 years without a truck between the last two... I never even considered the auto. 92k and very happy with the 5spd mated to the 4cyl. FWIW

    I've had both
    The manual is fun
But, with a manual when you don't feel like shifting and just want it in Auto
    You still have to shift
