Just realized that my spare tire was jacked, even after having the factory spare lock put on. Any ideas how they hell the did that????? When I looked under the truck, everything seems to be inplace, aside from the tire holder lowered a few inches.....bastids!

Not sure how they work, but some locks only have a handful of diff keys and u can buy replacement keys.... Under $20 could get u a few keys delivered... Then just scope the truck out one day and check the key code. Come back with the right key and ur done.

    Another idea.... Lock pick set.

Locks only keep honest people away, and low level crooks.

I have been tinkering with locks since I was 6yrs old at home.... Never on someone else's property.

I was volunteering at my moms work and her boss forgot her keys for some file cabinets which were simple wafer locks.... 5 seconds with 2 paperclips and I had it open. I was about 10yrs old then.

After I overdosed on muscle relaxers and xanax this year, my girl locked up my meds in a lockbox. She got me meds when I needed them for pain (I shifted my tailbone and smacked my head hard before I entered a coma). I eventually told her that the lockbox was only for her piece of mind, I wasn't suicidal anymore, and I felt bad bugging her for pain meds.

I told her I have been honest, but all it would take is a binder clips and 10 seconds to pop it open.... She said that if I opened it with a binder clip in 10 seconds she would not lock them up anymore because it was evident I was no risk to myself.

So, 1 binderclip and a few seconds later, it was open.

I'm not sure what kinda lock comes on the spare tire deal, but there's always a way around.

Rounded bolt exttactors defeat many wheel locks too.

I'm not giving out any big secrets.... This is well known.

I was thinking of taking my spare tire off and leaving it in my bed. I don't really use my bed in the winter time and it would be secure since I have a tonneau cover. Plus I don't have to get into the snow to check to see if it's filled with air or if I have to change it.

Great!! My spare was stolen 2 weeks ago. I have since bought & installed the Toyota lock kit which is from McGard & uses a key like on locking lug nuts. After reading this thread, I wonder how long I will still have my new spare..... I only noticed original spare was gone because my TPMS light would not go out. I checked my tires & then noticed my spare was gone. F***ers even cranked the cable back up after stealing it so it wouldn't be obvious it was gone.

Toyota solved this problem: my 13 does not have a lock..... Or tpms on the spare- found out at home yesterday (15lbs after service "multipoint inspection" said it was fine) Just crank and go..... That is sarcasm by the way..... On the list of things a 30k truck should have on it from the factory - tailgate lock also...........

If your 13 does not have the TPMS in the spare and you bought it new you need to get with the dealer. My 13 TRD came with the TPMS in the spare. As you know the spare is steel wheel instead of alloy wheel. I recently bought a new alloy wheel to match what came on the truck so I could rotate the spare instead of wasting one tire. The dealer took the TPMS out of my factory spare at no charge and put it into my new alloy spare. I now have that wheel in service on the truck and all is fine.

I actually have a 1/2 inch 8' rubberized cable with a weatherproof masterlock wrapped around mine. I suppose if you really wanted to take some time to try to cut the lock you could but my thinking is that they will move on to a easier target. (I hope)

I hope they didn't chip the shit out of the edge of your taligate with the cranker rod.

I cranked mine down just to lube the mechanism and check the spare's pressure... I noticed it was easy to chip the edge. I did wrap electrical tape in the area of the rod where it would rub the tailgate.

Sorry to hear you got bent over by a theif.
