Hmm that's what I thought, so that opening basically needs to be facing away from me where you can't see it so that when you pull up its on the bottom or you say the inner plastic moved too? I'm gonna need a pic of where that open is supposed to be.

And yes a screw driver was used to move it around (that ring)along with a few choice words. My buddy who had a taco was telling me how easy it was until he came over :)

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.

Yes that's exactly the issue!!! I'll try it when I get home and should post in a few hours. Maybe I can wetsand while watching MNF, that's the whole reason I want the tailgate off.

Fixed!!!! Thank you all and especially Konvict - he explained exactly what the issue was. We had tried going the wrong way with that ring. The opening of it originally was straight up. We went towards the tailgate on Sunday.

My buddy and I were thinking it was done on purpose after we go it off as a theft prevention method :)

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Ressurecting this as I appear to have the same issue with my tailgate. I can see the insert in the way of letting the tailgate out on the right side. Can it be removed entirely? Should it slide in easily or pull? Or do I just partially destroy the nylon ring?
