Deep cycle batteries usually make fairly lousy starting batteries. There are a few hybrid batteries out there but they are a compromise.

There a plenty of people running them with good results. I haven't once had a problem on a cold morning. Even without plugging my block heater still turns over easily.

Here is a general performance (CCA @ 0 degrees F) graphic published by Exide showing the relationship between temperature and performance of a fully charged battery @ 80 degrees F:

A starting battery has lots of amps short term a deep cycle has the capacity long term and can take many deep charging cycles, kill a starting battery a few time and you'll be buying a new one. Yes batteries have made quantum leaps over the past several years I hope yours does what you want. The figure to look at is amp hours if you are going to use it for camping.

I've been reading all these battery threads, and every time I think I have it figured out I realize I still don't have a clue.

Ideally, I'd like to run one battery but would be willing to go to 2 if needed. Here in Montana we see a few days to a couple weeks (depending on the year) right around 100 degrees. We also see about the same number of days around 25 below zero. I have a winch and use it, mostly for my forestry and hauling business but also offroading and hunting.

My OEM battery on my 2012 hasn't started to fail yet, but I know I will need to replace it before too long. Right now I'm torn between getting two yellow top Optimas or the Die Hard Platinum. I would consider other suggestions (red top/ yellow top?)...

But that's why I got this kind of battery. It has enough power to start the truck every time and the amp hours to last while camping. I have no need for a dual battery set up. it doesn't get down deep in the negatives here on Kodiak. The only reason I got the jumper pack was more for piece of mind and easy of being able to charge phones iPads and laptops, but it'll have the power to just myself or anyone else if the need arise.

If you have one of the name brand 12v fringe you should be fine with that battery. The fringe does not run all night long, on my diehard group 65 I can run 2 days without starting the truck.

The modern RV DC type fridge is very power efficient they do not use rotary compressors have low current draw and far better insolation. The cheap ones with no compressor are power hogs they will kill even a big battery in short order. The down side a good one can cost $500 or more.
