    Hello,

I recently purchased a new 2013 Tacoma with the 4.0L V-6. It currently has a little over 1,000 miles on it. The ToyotaCare maintenance plan won't cover an oil change until 5k miles which makes me a little uneasy. Should I change the oil myself right now and let the dealer do it again at 5k? If so, what brand of oil should I use to best match what the dealer will use at 5k miles?

    -Thanks

If you want to waste time, money and effort then change it. There is no reason to change it early anymore. Enjor your truck.

You can if it makes you feel better, but it will be fine if you don't. Go get oil and filter from the dealership if you want what they use. A lot of guys use mobil-1.

The Toyota care maintenance changed mine with 1800 miles on the odometer. (I don't drive very far)

Your manual says 5k or 6 months, what ever comes first. Toyota care says the same thing.

I changed mine out at around 1,000 miles... not sure if that was the best idea though after reading (not sure how true this is) that Toyota fills them up with some special "break-in" oil at the factory.

I'd change it early just because its what i've always done. It is really satisfying when you change it and see for yourself that the oil is clean and free of metal shavings. No matter what anyone else says, i'll always change the first oil between 800-2500 miles.

I don't think Toyota is concerned about months or miles. You get 5 service coupons under the free service program. I used all 5 of mine changing oil every 6 months. I put very few miles on my 2011 (most spent towing a bass boat), so I am concerned more about condensation than I am about oil breakdown. Dealer never questioned frequency of service appointments. By the way, my 2011 now has a grand total of 9753 miles on the odometer.

I tried Toyota service with my last truck 2 times and both times they didn't do what they were supposed to do. Took it in the first time and they didn't rotate the tires (I marked them with chalk). Took it in the second time and they didn't rotate the tires again (again marked with chalk). It stated very clearly that they would and I even asked the manager over the express service if they did. He said yes and then I took him out and showed him that I had marked 2 tires with distinctive marks and they in fact were not rotated. After that I said screw the "free" maintenance and did it myself from that point forward. They won't touch this new truck unless something goes wrong with it. At least when I do the maintenance I know it is done correctly.
