I thought GM was going to offer a diesel option with their re-introduction of the Colorado/Canyon to the American market?

diesel isnt anything special get over it guys.

Though a 5.7 tacoma would be pretty cool

I dont need the school bus size truck ( tundra) but the 5.7 Hp and Tq would be amazing in a 4400 lb truck !! :D

I heard that too....I'm guessing its still a possibility or they are just like us and they want to roll coal from their midsize pick-ups as well.

    TOYOTA ALREADY HAS IT....

    its called the

    2GR-FSE

Almost identical to our 1GR-FE... BUT shortened stroke (3.5L total) ... WITH D4-S Direct injection and dual VVTi. 305hp / 277Ftlbs (+69hp +12ftlbs over the 1GR-FE)

Pair that to the various 6 speed auto's they already have.... no need for major retooling... and you have a truck with more power n torque that would get 5-6mpg more than the current v6.... boom done.

But truth be told.... i can tell you exactly what the "new motor" will be in the tacoma.... the Dual VVTi 1GR-FE that the FJ / 4 Runner / Tundra already have ... no more no less.

Looks like everyone wants a diesel option.

The biggest question is, how's the market for it specially in a midsize? Is it that high in demand?

When I hear "diesel", I think superduty, HD's etc.

THIS! yeah diesel would be sick. but everyone seams to want it for better towing. well with that you have to have a stronger frame, and everything els. if i’m going to get a diesel for towing i’d get a 2500 cummins or something. for the size of the tacoma i really don’t think it NEEDS a diesel.

Disagree---build a diesel on the VW website and you will see the difference. Basically it is about $1,000 difference

considering, how hard it is to find used tacoma's and how reluctant toyota dealers are willing to deal on tacoma's (i just went through trying to buy used and said eff it and bought new) ... the demand for tacoma's is HIGH... its the only toyota vehicle that they dont have any dealer incentives or special financing on. The '13 v6 auto silver streak DCSB 4x4 OR that i bought... was the ONLY one of its kind in a 300 mi radius... and thats MANY toyota dealers here in southern california.

I would love a diesel in the tacoma... its just a better motor all around... but it isnt going to happen soon... toyota has NEVER been one to go out on a limb... it will take things like chevy / Chrysler / and nissan to do some type of diesel thing... watch the market and how those sell before making the decision to go as drastic of a change to diesel.

The BEST we can hope for is something along the lines of what i mentioned above... the 2GR-FSE or direct injection adapted to the 1GR.

BUT REALISTICALLY , the new motor will be simply the Dual VVTi 1GR-FE.

It will ONLY be when we see a motor change in the 4 runner / FJ / Tundra will we get a change 2 to 3 years later... just look at the history of the 4 runner vs tacoma updates.

Final thought... 10 bucks on the 2015 Tacoma having the Dual VVTi 1GR-FE. And i have NEVER been a betting man.

If Toyota offers a diesel option. Will buyers line up to pay 3-4k more for the option? When diesel is 70 cents a gallon more than gas today? Yes, a diesel will last longer and you may get 2-3 mpg more. But how many years to break even?

Explain me the advantages of a diesel IF you don't tow or plan on keeping the truck for 10 years to break even on the extra cost? Yes, less maintenance and greater torque. What else?

Would I have one if the price was the same as a turbo 4 cylinder, direct injection engine? Not sure, even for free. The 4 banger would probably get better mileage than the diesel and cost less per mile to own.

Yes, the diesel MAY cost less over the long term for engine maintenance, but that's the only plus I can think of. And yes, I have owned a diesel car in the past and it was fantastic on mileage, but kids on bicycles could pass me.

I don't hate diesel engines. But until the cost of diesel fuel comes down and the engine price is compatible with gas, I'll pass.

    Pros

    Better fuel economy
    Power to spare
    Better value retention

    Cons

    Higher unit cost
    Higher maintenance costs
    Sluggish performance

Guess I was wrong about lower maintenance....

The titian is getting a cummins. and i think the tundra will get a diesel in the next 3 years. I REALLY see them putting on in the tundra way before they do one in the tacoma. The tundra could USE one for more of whats it’s designed for. better than the taco. beside better MPG(hell not even that really a lot of the newer diesels get about the same as the full size gasers get. also toyota could put one in the tundra and if not right a way within a year or 2 they may come out with a 3/4 ton tundra. just putting a diesel in a tacoma is not going to make it tow more, if they don’t make the frame stronger and everything than it will be the same. a lot more goes into max towing than just engine size/power.

Yes, Tacoma are high in demand, but how's the market for "diesel" in NA. Toyota wants to cater to the masses not a small percentage of a market.

Out of the 2 truck Toyota offers, Tundra will be favored into getting the first diesel engine. imho

You need to go test drive a modern turbo diesel. Anything but sluggish....

I hope I get the survey.

Did they ask about transmission options?

The 2GR-FSE and 4GR-FSE with low boost intercooled turbos sound good to me. 350 and 300HP with a 6 speed auto and more em pee gees. :D

The numbers listed in seconds, is the 0 to 60 time for the optional engine. So you were asked to compare with time and price and engine type to pick your favorite.

Any diesel in a Toyota truck will not be designed for performance and may get crap for mileage if driven hard.

Higher unit/maintenance costs won't sell trucks. Yes, a few. But not enough to keep it on the market.

The titain has terrible sales numbers, and reliability is even worse.

Nissan is grasping for straws, they have no other options .

Toyota has two great reliable engines, most people just want to the diesel cause its not available but they know little about them.

just saw the new 2014 Ram 1500 with the Fiat 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel. Dodge claims 240hp and 400 lb ft. of torque. this was in Nashville at the International car show put on Motor Trend. Toyota had 2014 Tacoma Dblcab 4x4 Indigo Ink, same as my 2005 same color and truck, only difference that jumped out are the seats. still no bed lights on third brake light, so outdated.
