Yesterday I spotted a newer body style Taco (appeared to be a 2012 or a 2013) and it had an SR5 badge on the back and the TRD sport decal on the side. I thought those were separate packages? I just ordered a 2014 TRD sport and unless I missed it you can't get an SR5 package and a TRD sport package.

    What am I missing here?

I'm not sure about the 2013 and 2014 but up until then, all TRD's had the SR5 package. The TRD packages were just added on top of the standard SR5 trim. I don't see why that would have changed for the new Tacoma.

That makes sense. Essentially the Sport package is just on top of the regular SR5 package.

I didn't recall seeing any TRD Off Road's or SPorts at the lot having SR5 badges when I was looking last month but I could have missed them.

At one point, they stopped putting the SR5 badges on the tailgate even though the SR5 package was still included within the TRD package. It's possible they started putting them on again, someone swapped tailgates or someone put TRD decals on their SR5.

The truck you saw was a 2012. They stopped putting the SR5 badges on TRD packaged trucks starting in 2013.

You're a year off. My 2012 TRD Sport does NOT have an SR5 badge. I'm pretty sure that was the year they stopped doing that, along with other changes that were rolled out for that model year.

2005 - 2011 TRD models will have the SR5 badge on the tailgate.

If the OP saw one from 2012-2013 with the SR5 badge, it's probably what others have mentioned...either a custom mod, replacement tailgate, or maybe even a slip-up in production.

My 2014 TRD Sport has no SR5 badging, just V6. Funny though, I remember when SR5 was the shiz, kind of how XLT was for Ford. Back then Sport meant something else, too, and it wasn't good.

I think that it will differentiate between sr5 w/out full trd packaging as my 10 sport is essentially sr5 however it has a few of the trd upgrades, trd sport decals yet came with chrome grill, bumper and no hood scoop. The VIN and toyotaowners.com show it as a sport. Every area seems to have things that make there tacomas a little different my sportr5 has plain cloth seats where a full trd sport has an upgraded seat. I was a little burnt when i discovered all the differences but i paid less than a full sport pkg and i planned to mod it before i even bought it anyway.

2010 TRDs did have the SR5 badge, just fyi.

TRD is an additional package in addition to the SR5 package... All TRDs are SR5s but not all SR5s are TRDs!

I did hear the SR5 badge was dropped on newer Tacomas, but they still have all the SR5 features.

Maybe because a 6 speed was added? SR5 = Sport Rallye 5 speed

Didn't SR5 actually start when toyota wanted to identify models with a (at the time) leading edge short-ratio 5-speed manual transmission?
