Hopefully the Frontier will get a smaller version of the Cummins that the Titan is getting.

I also want a diesel... and working for the largest diesel engine manufacturer in the world, I know how easy it is for a company to release a small, economical and reliable diesel.....And toyota already has a great history of diesels.

Problem facing diesel now is that it isnt any cheaper to buy fuel ( like it used to be ), they raise the price of diesel to higher than gasoline to counter the higher mpg youd get with diesel. Cost of repairing a diesel is also a lot more, diesel's are engineered with much tighter tolerances than gasoline engines thus making parts a lot more expensive to buy parts. Companies are also building "new age" diesel engines that wont last as long as their "million mile" predecessors, many are producing throw away engines. Diesels in passenger vehicles are losing many of the perks that they once had. in my opinion.

Dont forget with all diesels now sold in the usa and canada have to have some form of aftertreatment.... whether that be a doc/dpf or solely scr as it is developed better.... And all of that will kill mileage and power and in most cases reduces ground clearance. So it is a big toss up.

This is why that news is strange. The only 4.2 engine in Toyota fleet is 1hd diesel from land cruisers, so that is strange but not impossible since towing capacity would put Tacoma into full size territory. So unless that means we getting inline 6 diesel as option that news is probably not correct.

And the 3.5 engine with only 220HP and 260lb-ft, when there's already the 2GR-FE that puts out about 270HP and 260lb-ft. Would kind of seem like a downgrade, even if it was slightly better on gas.

Their counter move should be a 3rd gen Tacoma that's the size of the 1st gen, with available manual hubs and manual transfer case, manual transmissions with steel pilot shafts and quiet throwout bearings, a dual VVT 4.0L engine AND a turbo-diesel available in all cab configurations, multiple axle ratio options, and stock control arms that allow for a correct front end alignment with a 3" lift kit. Wishful thinking, I know.

Toyota never said it has plans for a diesel equipped tacoma. Colorado will. That's why people are saying they want a diesel tacoma. That news I posted came from toyota.

That's why (proably) thats why toyota hasn't upped the 4.0.

The tundra comes with a 4.0 and has a 9.5k towing capacity. Which means (if its the same engine) the Tacoma should have a 9.5k towing capacity.

The problem with putting a bigger engine in is that the tacoma will still just have the regular 6.5k(?) Towing due to the frame (or what ever). With a bigger engine it 'will' tow better but people will be more tempted to exceed the limit and before then know it their frame is tweaked even though it "felt fine". The 4.0 w/how ever the Tacoma is geared makes the too end limit feel kinda sluggish (I presume) and wards people off from exceeding it.

I am sure I am missing some key point in towing.... but that's what I have come up with from my basic googling haha and what's been said on here :p

The salesmen here outside of Houston told me it's not what it can tow but what it can "STOP"

By that logic why can my 1.8l honduh pull a 5k trailer up a grade? ;)

(Assuming the engine can do it)

I was thinking the same thing. Rear discs would make a big difference in stopping power.

    DISC BRAKES \/
    [IMG]

Doesn't Tacoma have best stopping power in its class?

This dumb disc brake fad has hit the road bike scene as well. I don't get it. Which exposes another double standard....."i hate it when trucks have car attributes but why doesn't my truck have disc brakes" :p

That was a cool commercial, and 302hp on the six...we need a turbo or sc to get 302 HP...but I still love my Tacoma.

They certainly make a noticeable difference. Just because the Tacoma may have the best stopping power in it's class, doesn't mean it couldn't be better. Maybe not so much with an empty bed, but with decent amount of weight in the bed or while towing...

But if it's just a fad, I'm sure we'll be going back to front drums soon enough.

The Colorados had major engine issues in the past, I'm not sure if they've fixed them. The body looks 10x better than the old ones at least, still wouldn't buy one. If I was interested in just aesthetics I would have bought a Dodge. :p
