timing trouble

    Replaced head gasket, didn't matchmark anything pre teardown.Now I can't get it to run.I have it set to Tdc with intake pin up 1&2dots lined up on cam gears,have spark and fuel, rotor pointed at #1. Still not running.Chilton is NO help.Book says distributor turns clockwise but I watch it turn counter.can anybody help me.I'm not as smart as I think I am.
