I'm in the market for a 14 tacoma and will likely be getting a dcsb off road package. I was wondering if this short bed can hold a yard of mulch (bulk not bagged). I think a yard of mulch weighs about 800-1000 pounds so that should be ok weight wise right? What about volume/space wise?

I would say the bucket size (length of bucket compared to length of bed) they use is more of a concern. When I've had loads dumped into my long bed, it was maxed when he dumped diagonally with the bucket. (That sounds dirty) Volume wise it would probably fit completely filled. I had some space left over with a yard in my long bed. Weight is no problem with mulch.

    6' beds.

Volume wise of topsoil I believe you can fit 2 yards, but damn thats a lot of weight. 1 yard of dirt is about 1 ton. 2 yards being 2 tons. These are only half ton pickups.

I accidentally had 1 yard of topsoil dumped in and that had me driving about an inch over the bump stops. I meant to only have half a yard dumped. I also had a 1.5" AAL.

I just saw you said other truck. Probably a heavier duty pickup.

Wet mulch weighs much more than dry mulch.

That being said I have hauled much more than a half ton ( 1700 lbs ) for a few miles with no problems. I would load a little at a time to see how it does.

You can always ask for bobcat with a smaller scoop half a yard and dump it in the bed twice. There are lots of people around here with short bed haulin a yard if soil or mulch

A yard is a yard cubed, or 3*3*3=27 cubic feet.
The short bed is roughly 5'*5'*1.5' or 37.5 cubic feet.

Yes, you should be able to get a yard of mulch, plus some with the short bed.

Yep. And since one cubic yard of dry wood mulch is between 200-500 lbs (garden guides) and @ 70 degrees, if we filled our beds up with 6" of water, we would be up to 800 lbs. add the mulch (which I think we would agree would be too wet to be acceptable, and would swell overboard) and we are at my advertised max payload of around 1300 lbs.

Driver weight, passengers, mods and TSB may vary.

OP , the answer is YES! Get a yard of freakin mulch and send freakin pics before I buy my OWN yard of mulch and deliver it to my apartment!

I put a yard and half of dryish? mulch in my AC, stock suspension,
    no TSB...no problems.

Remember to take a rake or something to flatten out the load
in your bed. Works better when the load is more evenly
    distributed.

    Good luck with it.

It'll fit, I've done it. The front end loader bucket got most of it in, but not all. The place I went had snow shovels nearby and it worked great, had to shovel up the small amount that didn't make it in the bed.

Your truck will be sagging badly though, weak shit springs.

Capacity of the short bed is not really an issue. It's the loader that will be the limiting factor. A bobcat blade loads perfectly into the 6 foot beds. With the 5 foot bed there will be more spillage onto the cab or over the tailgate, and a better chance that the operate might tag your truck.

Yup that's what I meant bobcat with smaller width blade, some landscaping companies may not have em the ones near my place do.

Yeah, you definitely need a place that has a small sized bucket to fit the length of your bed for dumping in it.

I have a regular 6' bed and when I get mulch....the bucket is just 'as big' as the opening in the 6' bed.

This is what ONE scoop of mulch looks like in my 6' bed.

I have the TSB springs which puts my truck about 1" rake. After the mulch is put in it, it sits level....

I get a load of much and/or compost every spring. In "normal" years the load goes less than 1200 pounds and I have no issues. This past year was very wet and I took two half yard loads as the mulch yard owner said it would be closer to 1800-2000 lbs per yard.

Just as an FYI for you loading, put a heavy tarp on the bed before loading and one on the ground under the tailgate area. The load tarp can be used to pickup the "final" amount and save a lot of fooling around and the ground tarp collects all the mulch that falls through the tailgate opening onto the ground/bumper

i had my bed piled up almost to the top of the cab with mulch. the truck was almost sitting on the bump stops. not too safe, but good for the 1 mile trip home. i personally wouldn't fill the bed up with anymore then that blue truck a few posts above if you have to drive a good distance.

i put a yard of mulch and 1/2 yard of topsoil obviously seperate loads. I also carry plenty of firewood loads and i pretty much just go till i have a full load with my tailgate down and the cargo extender out. Its probably a bit overloaded but i drive close and i run rear 2"AAL and a Hellwig 550lbs helper springs, oh by the way its a DCSB TRD.
