I just went through the process of buying dedicated winter tires. Thanks for all the advice many of you have posted in various places on this forum. This process is also where my Consumer Reports subscription earned its price.

2013 winter truck tire rankings

CR "Recommended" with overall scores of 64-68/100:

Continental ExtremeWinterContact (68)
Nokian Hakkapeliitta R Sport Utility
General Altimax Arctic
Michelin Latitude X-Ice XI 2
Yokohama Geolandar i/T G072
Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1

Did not earn "Recommended," scores of 56-64:

Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT (64)
Toyo Open Country G-02 Plus
BFGoodrich Winter Slalom KSI
Firestone Winterforce UV

All of them got the top score for snow handling, and only Michelin scored well on "rolling resistance" (a MPG factor).

I went with the Yokohama Geolandar i/T G072 (265/75-16) on new Toyota steel wheels. The package deal made this the best choice within my budget. The GO72 scored well relative to the others in hydroplaning, dry braking and wet braking, all important in the Northwest mountains. Some other tires scored better in ice braking and noise.

I looked at and priced Goodyear Duratracs, Cooper ST Maxx, Cooper Discoverer M+S, Michelin XI 12, Yokohama Ice Guard and Hankook RW11, plus a few used (and overpriced) sets on Craigslist.

I just went through the same decision process for mine. I wound up with the General Altimax Arctics in the same size - 265/75-16s - studded. I just couldn't see how the stock 245 Bridgestone's would cut it in the snow and ice. Now if everyone else that drives in the snow would pony up and get snow tires we might get somewhere...
