When it's that cold I'll let the truck run for 30 minutes, LOL.

30 seconds or so, but i drive her very light until she warms up. Early shifting, no flooring it, etc.

She stays plugged in during the winter so warms up quick.

I wish they'd give us the option here. I'd love to plug it in overnight and keep the block warm.

The procedure I've used for as long as I have been driving. Start the vehicle, wait for all the dashboards lights to go out. Put the vehicle in gear and drive slowly until the temp gauge moves off the Cold mark, then drive normally. Letting a vehicle warm up for minutes is only for the benefit of the driver who requires a warm interior.

Since this is December 10th, I will respond to this with, the colder weather approach.

Normally, the windshield is frozen over with ice or heavy frost; even if you scrape the windshield, it is better to have warm defrost, before you drive away. So that takes a few minuets.

Even without the frozen windshield; I leave the engine warm up ; to get everything lubed thoroughly inside. Just makes sense to me.

I think we all know the perils of over idling, in place; but warming up seems to be the lessor of two evils. And of course it hurts the average fuel mileage.

it's not that cold yet. it's only 16F to 21F in imperial units.

there's local no-idle bylaws in our city. max 3 minutes. tough to enforce but they constantly promote it.

I'm going to site with most of the guys here, i don't let it warm up much (unless i'm cleaning snow off it)... i just drive like there is an egg under the accelerator until the temp nearly gets to the middle.
Did this on my last 2 4runners, never ever had an engine / tranny / diff problem (or any other drivetrain problem really) with either.

Do it yourself... it's easy. They run around $40 from the dealer and take around 30 minutes to install. There's a hole milled into the block for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UNmmhsyHag

I watch the ultragauge, when engine temps hit 100*F I ride out. I am used to it coming from a turbo car that needed to warm up a little before going. Living in Florida, it usually doesn't take more than a minute or so.

I always let it warm up for about 3+ minutes before I drive it. In the summer I turn it on and go back inside. In the winter I turn it on and go inside and wait.

Maybe 30 seconds as long as I'm not late for work. If it's stupid cold it might be 10 minutes or so as I let the cabin temp get warm while I sit inside.

Some will never know the joy of having to sit and wait for thier motor to warm up as they adjust the manual choke on the Holley carb...

Generally I let it warm up the amount of time it takes to load up the truck with my work stuff then get in, adjust seat belt, radio, etc. Then I go. However when the weather gets very cold, I let it warm up however long it takes the needle to move. Then I drive off, driving as gingerly as possible.
