I bought my current tacoma less than a month ago, and about a week after I got it I would have to turn the key a few times before it would start. Almost every time I go turn the key it will click once and then nothing. I do it 3-7 more times and it starts and runs fine. Everything still works with the key in the ACC position. Occasionally I will turn the and it will click once then I hold it and it starts. I've looked at the battery and all visible wires and I see nothing wrong. I have been trying to take it back to the dealer to get it looked at but just haven't had time.

How's the corrosion on the battery terminals? Sparkplugs look good?

Nonexistent, it's got 800 miles on it. They are actually shiny!

I don't think it's spark plugs because when it does get started it will run fine all day.

Poor Battery, High resistance connection on the battery or starter, or defective starter.

The click you hear is the starter solenoid, at that point the starter should turn.

Just like Guam, im sure corrosion will be a major pain in the butt for you.

I would first disconnect the battery terminals and clean them good.

They may look good but not making a good connection underneath.

if that doesn't work, then look at the battery, then the starter as stated above

Things like this are always frustrating. You buy a new vehicle and it has some problem and this kind can be difficult to run down. If you checked the battery voltage and it is good then there is a bad connection some place and it will have to be checked out. Most likely a lose wire or even a bad switch. Take it to the dealer and leave it. Get a loaner and go about your business until they find the problem.

Sounds like a bad battery or like your starter is locking up.

I would check the battery's State-of-Charge and fully recharge, if necessary., especially if the vehicle has been parked for several weeks. Batteries are perishable and new to be periodically recharged to prevent sulfation and to replace the power lost by the natural self discharge and the vehicle's parasitic load. Next, I would look for corrosion, oxidation or paint between the battery terminals and posts or ground. If the problem persists, I would have the battery, charging system and starter load tested.
