It's for the 4cyl only. V6s are still spec'd at 5w-30. If Toyota's got it down that the vehicles can run those intervals w/o wear, more power to 'em. I'd personally run some UOAs to get a good base line at say 5,000 and 7,500 mile intervals and see what Blackstone has to say.

20 weight is pretty thin, especially if you're hard on the truck. I wouldn't sweat the 0 weight as it's good for cold start conditions. I run 0w-30 in my STi with fantastic UOAs.

If you read the manual this poster is correct with what the manual says. There is a full synthetic that is 5w30 that you can get. I was told it was made through Esso. I had a deal with my dealership last month because they had put in 0w20. They switched to 5w30 full synthetic 2 days later when I was able to get it back in to do a full flush and a filter change. I felt that the power was there quicker 0w20.

If some of you were instead. I added an attachment of what is recommended through Toyota. I got it through another dealership when I was dealing with my dealership crap.

    Right.

I'm just saying that with a truck if you're going to push the motor hard I'd be careful running 0w-20 for the extended intervals due to oil breaking down. If the UOAs come back clean, then I wouldn't stress.

I'm a little OCD about oil change intervals though as I've got a turbo car who's model lineage is known to eat oil at high rates.

If you're going to pushing the motor harder than I would be staying with 5w30. I wouldn't personally want to go to 0w20. "Apparently" nothing could happen if you ran 0w20(long term) but that hasn't been proven from what I found.

Look at the chart. The 4 cylinder(2TR-FE) is the exception. The 1GR-FE is spec'd as optional.

Exactly. Low power small displacement motors that are doing light duty cruising is one thing, but trucks are another ballgame. Granted most of us probably don't rev out the motors, but still.

That's why I like doing oil analysis. I'm probably due for my first for this truck as I'm closing in on the 15K mark.

Oh I totally agree. If you were constantly running high revs and driving the truck outside of normal(racing for example) then the 5w30 would be a safer bet. The only thing that I could see 0w20 being ran is if you lived in a really, really cold climate. But you can get 5w30 full synthetic like I said above. Instead of using 5w30, 50/50 oil the dealers use.

Just FYI, the 1GR-FE 4.0 V6 in the 4Runner is specified to use 0W20, so they do use it elsewhere in the V6.

The reason for them specifying 0W20 is to squeeze as much EPA fuel economy rating as possible for CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reasons.

Personally, I'd never use 0W20 in the V6, but I do use 0W30 Mobil 1 AFE in the winter for cold start protection.

The Dealership I got that chart from had told me that soon enough everyone is going to be running full synthetic(for new vehicles). It's going to be a matter of time.

I'm running 0W-20. I've always used it in the winter, then 5w-20 in the summer. Seems to start easier in subzero temps, and it still has good compression, power etc. I'm pretty hard on it, no issues.
