Can you please clarify a little more? After my trade in, but including tax & lic fees, the OTD cost is $17,285.64. So how is the $18k price more efficient?

I would say the same thing it still runs. Wait for the 3rd Gen if you can.

    I based what I wrote on what you wrote. This is what you wrote;
"The '13 taco has 8k miles on it and is priced at $28,995. After lic and tax (after trade in), the out the door price is $31k."

Lets make sure this is clear:

You can buy the truck (without any trade in) for 31K OTD.
Then you subtract your 13K trade-in for a total cost to you of 18K.

Take a look at each piece:

I think 28,995 is too much for a used truck when you can buy a new one just like it for probably 30K. I paid 29K for my 2013 AC TRD OR Auto. But that is all a very personal decision. If you really dig the truck for that price, then buy it and be happy.

13K for your 2004. You'd get more selling it yourself but then you'd have to hassle with buyers and spend the time to do it. Your 2004 is due for it's timing belt. Unless you do it yourself, you're looking at $1500-ish?

I'd try to get the price down a bit on the 2nd gen but make them stick to the 13K trade value. Those should be separate issues anyway. Dealerships usually make their best margins on used cars. If you just gotta have it, then get it. But, remember, this is not a rare tacoma. There are thousands of Tacomas just like this one rolling around. We all love our Tacomas but in the end, they are just a mass produced car that Toyota has sold a bazillion of. You can find another one if this one disappears.

    Happy hunting and good luck!

Sounds a little high to me as well. But to me it sounds like you emotionally bought the truck, and the salesman probably will pickup on that, making it real hard if not impossible to get them to come down on the price. I could be wrong.
    Walk away. If you can?!?

Crap, I meant $31k before factoring the trade in. $10k is out da door after trade in.

After thinking about it more, I've realized that I should haggle more on their vehicle cost, or out the door final, or just walk away. I plan on visiting the Toyota dealer across the street tomorrow as they have an identical one, new, for $33k (which seems high).

So was the $29k for your truck the out the door price? What was the sticker?

As for my '04, I'm a former Toyota tech so all the maintenance is up to date. I do agree that a private sale would bring more in, but I did consider trade due to seeing what kind of numbers they were willing to produce. I've never purchased a new car before so I'm a little inexperienced with dealing with dealers...

29k was before taxes and license. I paid for that on my own. As I recall, I could get a double cab version of the same truck for about 30k. In my area, tax and license comes to about 10% of the purchase price (or the difference between the purchase price and your trade in if you have one).

Get exactly what you want and pay whatever price you're happy with. That's the bottom line.

Oh, the sticker was maybe right around 31k?? I don't really recall now. Sorry. The sticker was $750 over the price I saw when I built it on the Toyota website. The $750 was for dealer prep/delivery. At least I think it was $750. Haha...I'm lost without seeing the window sticker!

I don't think most people commenting here realize that cars in Hawaii are more expensive. I lived there for 3 years and know that the market value markup sucks. Used Tacomas hold their value very well so it's probably not the best price you can get but you're not getting raped either. Can't hurt to see what they'll sell you a brand new one for though.

Regarding taxes, you have to pay full taxes, the trade in is like a cash down payment, so regardless of the amount of the trade in offered, taxes are paid on the negotiated sales price before any cash or tradein credit is applied....

You do not pay sales taxes on just the net amount after tradein or cash down payment...

OP, negotiate, you have a truck to drive, typically, car sales after Xmas take a dive and dealerships are more apt to bargain to move inventory...

    Good luck with purchase...

Is this a state by state case, as far as the taxes and how they're applied? It must be, because here you only pay for the amount you are finalizing. In other words, you only pay tax on the amount after your down payment or trade in, but not the negotiated sticker price. It made a substantial difference in taxes (over double) if I didn't put a trade or down payment.

But yes, I do agree that I should negotiate the price more, especially since I got a perfectly good truck. Shit I'm even starting to get a lil stressed from all these numbers and thinking that I might say screw it and just keep mine! Haha I guess we'll see. And the weird thing is even my wife approves of the whole sale/trade in, which I thought she wouldn't..

I really appreciate all your advice and everyone that left an opinion or advice. It really helps to keep me thinking realistically!

No don't do it. 1st gens are better! Put a timing belt kit, new plugs, change all fluids and keep on driving! Maybe spring on a few mods! I miss my 1st gen every day but the growing family forced me into a bigger truck.

I was in a similar boat months ago, decided to go new as within a couple years the price barely changes. Plus you get to pick your color:p

    BUT I didn't have a taco prior, just a 4 door car.

On the plus side of my 1st gen, I already did the tbelt/water pump, n all fluids. Even got a toytec lift on it and it's a four door already. I think I'm just being a little too picky at this point as it's a want, but not a need.

Are you saying to get it because I'm still young and able to afford it, or am I confused? My 1st gen's already paid off so I definitely know that feeling.

You may not want to hear this again, but I would keep your 1st gen. I just paid off my 2nd gen this summer and I'm enjoying the extra $400 every month in my pocket available for other things, emergencies, savings, investments etc. Especially since yours seems like a well maintained truck.

I think you answered your own question right here. You already have a good price ($0) if it's already paid for.

I think you're right, along with the others who are advising against the purchase. I really do want it, but again, don't need it, and I realize that.

Again, I appreciate everyone's advice and input as it has definitely helped to make my decision. Mahaloz fellow TW members!
