I emailed asked a few questions out of curiosity and suggested they check out TW to see if they could find any info on when stuff like this happens. I also suggested entering the vin on the Toyota service history website.

If the original paperwork says it's a TRD, can they pursue legal action against the dealer?

I can't say if you're going to have any recourse when it comes to this(I am not a lawyer). There also could be a statue of limitations as well. This post as well what was posted on CL is so vague. It can lead to interruption. It's going to come down to the paperwork(possibly). But what's not the dealership to say that you changed parts on it? How come you waited 3 years to come and tell us? I also think that the owner(OP) should have done some due diligence and did some research. I also think that calling out a company just based on the little information and waiting 3 years to do, is just dumb. I think you should get all your information and present before calling someone out with very little information. I highly doubt you're going to really get anywhere. You could always go and get a second opinion.

Enlightened me trd off road owners but going by that bed pic with what we assume is the factory installed decal, I thought trd off road package has color matched flares and chrome bumper? No?

They should have done their homework first. Was it sold new, I doubt it, then what did the window sticker say. If bought used anyone could have put it on, and a salesman will tell you anything to sell a vehicle,. You need to know what your looking for and what it comes with. Too many people these days just go on a lot and let the salesman sell them anything they have on the lot. Go to any lot and say you're looking for a small truck and they would try to sell you a Chevy LUV if that was the only one on the lot, and give you 50 reasons why that truck is the best of all small trucks, and why that particular truck is the best in the world and won't last at that price/have 5 more coming in to look at it this afternoon.

Dang, I didn't even notice the skewp. Appears the craigslist OP is just a moron, and the salesman saw him coming and pounced on it.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
That is the oddest collection. Skewp and color matched grille. Black flares and a black rear bumper with an OR sticker? I want to see the inside to see the seats...

Judging by the bumper, most likely the previous owner did some modding, adding a color-matched grille, skewped hood, and TRD OR stickers.

So, he knows it's not an Off Road and now he is passing it off as such. What a douche bag!

He's asking for too much. KBB retail (taking into account the bumper and the shell) is $11679 for the base model and $11814 for TRD OR.

Whatever premium he paid for the TRD OR package had shrunk to $135 now.

He purchased the truck used and it was a modded truck by the former owner is my best guess.

I can assure when it was taken in on trade the vin was ran and the dealer had the options listed so they knew how much to take the truck in for on trade.

It was three years ago that he bought it and who knows what he thought he heard when he had on his rose colored glasses.

Any other crap craigslist posted. He saw TRD and the skewp and was sold.

Wrong wheels and mismatched hodge podge of door handles, side view mirrors, skewp, grille and so on. It is just a SR5 4x4 with the chrome wheel option but now he himself sells it as a TRD model.

Maybe the newest buyer will post back in three years complaining about the seller on craiglist too.

Or make a copy of both the ads, save them and then take them on Judge Judy in a couple of months.

Wow!!, PO bought a base model Tacoma and threw a decal and a aftermarket bumper and scooped hood. I can't believe the owner drove this piece for 3 yrs and didn't realized it's not a TRD OR model. You can't see other TRD OR Tacomas around town and wonder why yours looks somewhat different? Sorry but no sympathy here.

Hey, wait a minute, this camper shell/truck is in another thread I commented on today:

That's funny I looked at that thread earlier today and thought it looked familiar. This guy is getting some free marketing from TW today lol
