    Hello,

    Have an 09 Tacoma access cab 2.7 4bannger 5 speed. I find the fuel economy to be somewhat lackluster. I was wondering if anyone has played around with switching gear ratios from 4:10 (stock I think) to 3:73 to improve fuel economy. Do you recover the cost of switching the gears from savings in gas?

    The 5 lug has a different ratio from the prerunner & 4wd. I believe you have 3.15:1

    Let's say re-gearing saved you 5% in fuel economy. This would be a saving of ~70 cents per hundred km according to my numbers, so it would take very close to 300,000km (~180k miles) to recover the cost of re-gearing assuming a $2000 job. Hard to see how it'd be worth it.

    your numbers seem to add up. I didn't think switching the gears around would cost around $2000. I thought that all you needed to do was pop the covers of and change the ring and pinion gears in both the differentials?

    I don'tknow about yyou but with my 4 cylinder with with larger tires benefitted from 4.88 vs going smaller.

    Pop the covers off and drop in new ring and pinion is a gross generalization of the process. It's time consuming and fussy for a first timer. You have to get your gears set up right for them to work properly and last.
