What truck do you have - SR5, Sport or OR. Why do you want a LSD? The True-Trac wouldn't be my choice if I were looking for Off Road performance.

    Yes, no, maybe, sort-of....

If he's looking for LSD that's not engine limited by traction control in 4wd I hope he bought the Off Road, other wise....

Only 05-08 sport models came with real LSD. 2009+ comes with auto-LSD which is a LSD simulated with the brakes.

The electronic LSD on the sport sucks . Shouldnt even be allowed to be called LSD . A clutch type LSD would of been nice for those of is that don't need a locker .

I've been considering one of these

please excuse the newbness of this question and the partial-thread-jacking:
Is an LSD (in the rear) more or less likely to kick out/walk on you than an Open Diff in slippery conditions, like ice?
I know how an LSD works and when I picture the scenario in my head, I can come up with both...

My first and only experience with an LSD was being a passenger with someone who didn't know that the car had an (rear) LSD; he tried to swing the rear out and fish-tail around a 90 degree corner on a dirt road; and the owner (also passenger at the time) screamed "NO, IT'S A POSI!!" as we careened straight into the ditch, because it didn't swing-out...

Does that answer my own question?
Would an LSD be less likely to violently kick out on you in slippery conditions?
cause, like I said, picturing the mechanics of it in my head; I can envision it, at least in certain situations, being more likely too

POSI is GM's name for limited slip. My 2000 Trans Am WS6 had one and it did alright in the snow. It stayed straight most of the time unless I was purposely trying to kick out the rear end.

My 1986 V6 Camaro had an open-diff. It was underpowered, and even had snow tires on it. If I wasn't careful, I was instantly doing a 180 in traffic.

My 2008 Tacoma has the real LSD, and it does alright in 2wd. Any troubles getting around in snow is usually because the rear end is lighter than the front end. It still stays inline unless I give it too much gas.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
It depends on which limited slip you are using. For example Eatons' Truetrac will hold traction but when single wheel loses completely it will act like open diff.
If you are using LSD from original Tacoma (Hino) that diff will power both wheels until both lose traction. So it will provide traction longer but when it loses traction it's going to be on both wheels, sending rear end either to left or right.
This is especially dangerous driving in mountains. However, benefit of LSD is that with couple bags of send you will not need 4x4 as often as you would need by having open differential.

Not mechanical LSD since the 2008 model... All Tacomas have AUTO LSD and TRAC limited slip. Only the Off Road has more traction available from the factory.
