For the past couple weeks I have been shopping for a new truck. I've test driven a couple of Tacomas and have called several dealerships. Today I got a call from Houston TX (713-401-1807) congradulating me on my recent purchase of a 2014 Tacoma. The lady couldn't tell me where I bought it, when I bought it, how much I paid for it, or even the VIN number for the truck.

I was quite shocked by the call and imediately started thinking along the lines of Identity fraud or something. I know it wasn't a wrong number because she asked for me by name. I think she works for Toyota because she said maybe the customer service department could answer the questions that she couldn't, and she gave me their number (800-331-4331). I talked to one lady that was of little help, she ended up hanging up on me. I called back and talked to another lady, then a man. Neither of them could explain what may have caused Toyota to think they sold me a truck. Nor were they interested in assisting in the matter. It was if I was wasting their time by even calling to make them aware of the situation.

I've bought 4 new Toyota 4x4s since 1994, the current one being a 2001 Tundra. And it may very well be my last.

You may want to check with your wife. I think she's probably bombing around in a new tacoma. You gave her the credit card right?

I wouldn't blame Toyota for this. It is most likely a sales strategy for a dealership you visited.

Yeah, but I live in Arkansas and this call came from Houston.

I wouldn't call it a sales stategy because who wouldn't be shocked for someone congradulating them on a $34K truck that they didn't purchase?...

Arkansas is part of the Gulf States Toyota dealer network. GST is based out of Houston. That's probably the reason you got a call from a Houston number. GST is a private company and separate from Toyota Motor USA so you may want to try and contact GST directly

Just check your credit and see if something was purchased or not.
    Check with dmv for registration?

Probably a glitch... Toyota is retarded in that way.

Have you given any of the dealerships your credit information?

    I wouldn't worry about it.

If I understand it correctly the dealerships get an allotment based on sales and it's not a 1 to 1 ratio. So, if dealer "X" reports 1 sale they may get 1.2 vehicles on the next allotment. There are also other incentives from the manufactures and even if the sale is not complete such as the credit is refused and they'd spotted the truck they still report it as sold. But, who knows...it's been years since I worked sales for Toyota.

If your worried about it. do a search on the phone number and get the address where it came from. Go to Google Earth and find the place. See if it's some ones house or Toyota.

I picked up one in NC, went to the dealer to the sales guy and meet for the close on the 3 year 0% and pick up the truck.
Done this on him calling and telling me when to show up.
Got there and he was not around, said I will wait on him, she said OK.

Then started walking around, sales desks were all on the show room floor.
Then she walked over and said you know he is in a class and will not be back for a few hrs.... I said BS he called and told me to come down.
She said have a seat at his desk, I will get someone to help you. I had walked by it 10 times already.
ANyways on the way over I see a file and papers, sticky on it with my name....
What is it, ALL MY INFO, Everything about me laying on top, along with other people's files to the left and right, been there a day or so.....

I went Postal, I about blew a gasket on them and got my file and ask WTF is going on, turned the others over and ask if this is now you do it and leave all the people that buy something from you, leave their credit info out on a desk.
About 30 people got wind of what was going on....

Anyways it took a lot of talking to get me over it and the guy did not come back to work for them.

No telling who has my info and I need to watch my credit report all the time now.
Plus I get a bunch of calls and Junk email, plus junk slug mail from them.
Toyota Sucks when it comes to letting you info out.
