I have had a squeel at start up for 5 mins or so for the last month. I went through some water (2 feet deep) yesterday and now it always squeels. I think it is the belt or idler wheel. I have a few questions. 1. I am going to relpace the drive belt (I have 100k miles on the truck its due anyway) Is there a write up on that. I can find one. 2. how do I determine if a idler wheel is bad and what one. Is there a write up on parts #s and how to test/ replace them. I found this on a FJ forum http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/foru...154-idler-pulley-bearing-failure-what-do.html and was hoping there was a similar write up with part numbers. thanks

that I am doing anyway.... I am just wondering if anyone had any write ups on replacing the wheels. I understand the bearings are not sealed and tend to go out if you go through water. I would love to fix it all at once

I read a few ways people have tried to determine which idler is bad but I decided to just replace them all, including the idler on the tensioner. I went with Gates products from Rock Auto and have been happy with them. First of all, make sure it's the idler and not either the A/C compressor, power steering or the alternator. I just drew a simple diagram of the belt since Toyota didn't put one on under the hood.

How did you determan it what not the compressor, powersteering or the alternator and what where the part numbers for the parts

Turn the A/C on and off and see if it impacts the squeel (if the squeel gets much worse once the A/C compressor kicks on, that's your culprit), when parked, turn the wheel side to side to see if the squeel gets worse, the alternator is a little more difficult because it's hard to jump up the electrical load to see if it starts getting worse.

Unfortunately, they use flash so I can't link you to the exact part but this should help:

You got 100k miles on the belt that supposed to last 30K ? Freaking awesome.
I would replace belt and all idlers... you save enough to afford that :D

They're only supposed to last 30k miles?!?!?! I got almost 90k out of mine, it wasn't making noise and looked fine so I never bothered replacing it.

I used a mechanics stethoscope. I thought mine was the alternator ended being an idler pulley.

Great tool to have. About $20

Well there are other threads on this, a few of em, but...

Pull the belt. Spin your idlers. Which makes noise? Which feels shitty? Ta da!

    Check tensioner too

I think 30 000 is the first check and if bad replace. So I would guess thats where they estimate 30k is the limit. Than Again if somebody drives like old lady that belt can last much longer. :D
I have 70k on mine and planning to replace it this year with all the idlers and new tensioner.
But I drive like old lady so even after 70 k my belt looks decent.

Rock Auto only sold the tensioner as an assembly with the arm and the pulley. To replace it that way is a PITA because there is a lot bolted to that arm. I zipped the new pulley off the arm and just replaced the pulley itself. Unless you need the arm also, I would do the same. Remember, that pulley is reverse threaded! And yeah, I drive like an old lady :anonymous:

ok I have a loose idler wheel, I can wiggle it and did the water test that everyone shows on you tube. As soon as I hit it wil a spray bottle the squeek went away. It is the wheel right by the alternator. Can I get a subject matter expert to confirm this is the correct wheel I need

I have always bad luck with tensioners since salt likes to eat spring and cake inside making it stuck. ... I figured 70k is enough for it so time to go for new one. I will worry when I get there...
As long as weather is decent I will remove everything, more items to check. :D
