    Hey guys,

I'm hoping some of you can give me an idea of what is making this noise on my truck. I don't think this is the infamous Toyota tick. Other than that, the truck and everything seems to be running just fine.

I noticed this as it has gotten colder. This usually starts from 30 degrees and below.

Here is an audio clip of the noise. Use headphones/earbuds if possible.

You can hear it slightly in the background within the first 20 seconds.

1:06 - 1:09 you can hear the vibration noise right before you hear the brakes solenoid sound

    1:22 - 1:23 it's pretty loud

You can hear background taps from from 2:05 to 2:20

    Briefly at 2:28 while accelerating.

I usually only hear it at idle or initially stepping on the gas, but I have heard it while accelerating normally.

You did not say which engine you have; I am guessing you have the 4.0L. They are notoriously noisy. The cams on these engines are not a hydraulic roller like most vehicles now days. Some of them have piston slap too when cold.

    Yes it's the V6 4.0 Sorry.

It sounds like it comes from the drivers side. It can make the noise at idle as well as when accelerating.

I'll see if I can get another recording of the sound. It's never been super consistent.

I can't hear the noise well enough to know. But my exhaust makes a noise in similar situations - engine cold, just after starting, either just beginning to accelerate or stopped with my foot on the brake and the truck in drive. It goes away as soon as the engine warms up. (My exhaust is flattened, so I think the shop that did the work didn't hang it very well.) One thing to look at is all the rubber exhaust hangers. They should be centered on the metal hook that they hang on. If they are pushed one way or the other, the exhaust pipe can't vibrate as freely as it should, and that can push some noise into the truck.

Also check the catalytic converter heat shields. They can come loose and rattle. They make a medium pitched tinny sound. Fairly easy to tighten them up.

Check the intake where it goes through the fender. Mine vibrates when it's really cold just like the conditions you specified.

My truck makes (sometimes, needs to be freezing cold and not driven for a few hours) funny noises when it's really cold until warmed up. I understand, I hate the cold as well.

Thanks everyone. Once it's warm enough I'll climb under and take a look. Really appreciate the input.

BUMP. You ever find out what the issue was? My truck (06 4.0) has a very similar sound when it's idling or slow acceleration. It started slightly yesterday but was much more apparent this morning. Although it was about 72 degrees when I started it today. Hmmmmm
