My buddy has a 2012 Tacoma with 30K on it. Last week theCheck engine light came on and he took it to the dealer. They are telling himthat a rodent got into the manifold area and chewed the harness. They want$2200 to fix the problem. They also told him that part of the cost was becausethey needed to replace the knock sensors as they could not check to see if theywere bad or not due to the wire being chewed up, each sensor was $265. I told him to tell them to hell with the sensors. They need to replace the wireharness then see is they are bad.

Your insurance will pay for the fixing of the wire harness.

I have seen this kind of thing DOZENS of times when I worked at the dealerships. Mice can do a number on wiring harnesses. That being said, saying the knock sensors need to be replaced is stupid. You can connect up the new harness to the knock sensors and test them right then.

That's what I told him. It's not so much fixing the harness as selling him unneeded sensors

My quote was $1800 to fix. My insurance covered the extra over the deductible.

Do a search here about what is involved to replace the harness, the top parts of the motor all have to come off. The part is a little over a hundred, it's the labor that is the killer.
