They definitely serve a purpose. I purchased my current one on eBay. Its doing it's job well. Its been keeping large amounts of fugitive dust and particulate matter out. The site I've been on for the last yr and a half processes soil. It regularly turns into a dust bowl. They often use pulverized limestone to alleviate the moisture content. The latter is the devil's dust.

I've used the baking soda one from walmart, and I didn't like it. The baking soda coating was too dense and it significantly reduced the airflow. I got a wix from o'reilly's auto parts, and I like it much better. It is very close to the factory filter that comes with the truck. I like all the wix products but that's just my opinion.

My filter provided a very nice bit of protection and kept all kinds of crap (and I do mean CRAP).. outta the fan when Mrs. mouse set up her nursery in there..... All I noticed was a marked reduction in airflow... checked the filter and pulled enough mouse nest material to choke a horse...OK, I did not make the horse eat it..hehe

I cleaned the filter and replaced....

Sorry if my search abilities are lacking but could someone point me to a thread that shows HOW to change the filter? Can't seem to find it.

Edit: nevermind. This is a good one on YouTube if anyone else is wondering:

I am a complete idiot... I should've checked here first. Guy at dealership had me convinced the cabin air filter change was necessary for everything from helping with my allergies to lowering my taxes. They got $60 out of me this morning. And all I wanted to know was why my A/C was so weak.

    nothing cool
the first time i changed my cabin air filter I think i watched a couple youtube videos and read all the instructions on TW. then after doing it it only took about 3 minutes. so easy to do. the longest part is attaching that tension thing on the right side so the glove box doesnt fall open too fast.

Here is what the 2010 DCLB PreRunner's I just purchased from the local dealer looked like when I got it home. They said they had completely serviced the truck before delivery,so I took for granted they would have at least checked this. The air filter looked just as bad. Shame on me for trusting a dealer, if it was a private sale I would have went over everything. That's some petrified mouse crap there.

Took my 2009 in for an oil change at 30k and they showed me both filters. Wanted $30 each and I said put the old ones back in. I took my cabin filter out and blew it off about every 10k and it was still original when I sold with 87k. I drive in dusty stuff quite often but do not use the system as much as most. I checked Auto Zone and O'Reillys and they were like $28. Cabin filters are the biggest ripoff going.

Yup... I would imagine that we have all done something similar at one time or another

I change my filter every other oil change and buy them off Amazon.
