ok the truck started making noise about a week ago. I did a water crossing no to deep but probably half way up the tires/bottom of front bumper. well the truck started with a screeching noise or a winding noise. thought it was the belt up front but when i get out to listen while idling no noise. i hear the noise when I'm going about 40 and above and when i stop or slow down it goes away. also sounds like its in the back but i don't think its the brakes. Thanks for any help

Start by checking your rear differential fluid. If the fluid is milky change it right away because you got water in there. The breathers are placed on top of the housing, which is a bad place for them if you do water crossings. Bearings and water dont mix.

Drain your rear differential and see if any water comes out.

Toyos have problems with differential.. I just changed mine... starts with screech and gets worse.. check it out before it gets worse.. you can make it worse.... Stealership charges about 2800. for the whole thing .. I went to yotamasters. Too far for you, but they can give you ideas, help and parts if needed....

Was the oil milky when you drained it?

If it wasn't milky that means there wasn't water contamination. It might be a wheel bearing. Do you have a go pro or access to one?

Lift up the rear axle, spin there tires(with your hands first), see if you can hear anything. Maybe there's something caught up in the brakes.

Could also be a ujoint squeeking. All the grease could have washed out. Pull off rear driveshaft and see if anything is seized or squeekin.

Without hearing the noise it's very hard for us to pinpoint.

If you can't hear anything when spinning the tires while jacked up, you can pull the rear drive shaft and drive around in 4wd. If it still makes noise it isn't the shaft.

I'm going to revitalize this thread as I'm having the same issue. Dropped a jet ski at via beach launch and was pretty deep in salt water for a while. Taco is at service center where they also couldn't diagnose the issue.... I suggested rear diff as a possibility and they're going to do the rear diff service for $100. We'll see...

Checked all wheel bearings and they were fine. Only 36,000 miles on the truck.

Pretty close to that sound actually. Dealer serviced the rear diff and found no water. Is that sound the front wheel bearings?? Like I said, dealer checked and found no play and said they were "good".
