No. He drained the transmission and added the oil to the oil that was already in the ENGINE, not the transmission. (I am inferring from your post that you believe he put engine oil in the tranny. Perhaps I am reading it wrong.)

Hallelujah! No damage done. Boss is driving it back now. He volunteered to go with the tow truck since I had to work. $200 for repairs and $70 (will be reimburse) for tow truck.

I'm 33. This is my first Toyota. SMH, Yes this dipstick read the oil dipstick wrong. Bad eyes, poor lighting, pressed for time, inexperience, laziness? Whatever it was, it was 100% my fault and I take ownership. I'm no expert but I did do all the basic maintanence on all my other crappy cars before so I thought I could here. I never had to look hard to find the oil plug on my Nissan or Honda much less worry about draining the trans fluid.

Definitely will mark it for future reference but doubt I'll ever make this mistake again, at least on this truck hehe.

Manual calls for 5.2 qrts for 4wd and pre runners. So if I did it right in the first place, it would've been a little short if anything.

Gonna hang my head in shame for the next few weeks!

Dude no sweat - glad your truck is ok!

In all honesty, the first time i changed my oil I was wrenching on the tranny oil plug like a mother until I stopped and looked around and realized i was way too far back on the truck in order for this to be the oil drain plug...

It's happened to me before on my old v6 tundra(1grfe). I accidentally drained the transmission fluid and added 5 quarts of oil. So double the oil, no tranny fluid. Drove for about 300 feet and my rpms were going crazy. I bought tranny fluid (from Toyota) a pump, and pumped it in. Drained the engine oil (double the amount). I was pretty bummed. I had a gasket seal break and had a leak behind the engine. Took it to Toyota and got it fixed under warranty.

Depending on how far you drove it like that I would hope they didn't just put new fluid (3qts) in. I would want that overheated fluid out of there. I hope you don't have issues down the road but I would keep vigilant.

Don't feel bad I started to do the same thing but realized it was transmission fluid as soon as I saw it coming out. I'm also 60 years old and have done it many times.

Glad it ended well. Trust me, some TW member is reading this and have been educated on your mistake, which unfortunately occurs more often than you think on the 2nd Gens.

Man, don't feel bad. I'm 52 years old, been wrenching on vehicles of almost every type since I was 14. Trucks, tractors, cars, even heavy equipment a time or three. Needless to say, I've changed oil probably several hundred times over the years.

When I crawled under my new Tacoma to do it's first oil change, I was not sure which drain plug to use. I went on Tacoma World and did a search. I just couldn't wrap my head around that little pan being the engine oil pan. I still wasn't 100% convinced so I called a local independent shop that I have used and asked one of the techs I knew. He laughed at first, then first confirmed I had the right drain plug, then he shared they have had two trucks in for the exact same mistake AND a new oil guy in their shop had drained the wrong one on the first Tacoma he worked on.

Point of this whole story: Don't feel bad. This truck has a strange oil pan and it's an easy mistake.

I smell a troll at work here with this thread....the story and his posts don't add up. I could be mistaken.....but I don't think so. Am surprised no one else caught this sooner.

    Just saying....

I'll be the lucky TW member referenced above! Happy everything worked out with minimal cost/damage. I have a 2012 and just had last free service from TC, have been considering doing my own oil changes but have always been fearful of screwing up due to lack of mechanical ability and knowledge. In reading multiple horror stories of problems TW members have had with service I figured it's time I man up. I have no problem spending 6-8 hours detailing but simple oil change worries me. Have read tutorial on TW and will triple check, I only drive 1000 miles a year so doubt I will do every 6 months but plan to switch to the Mobil synthetic and use oem filter. Thanks for posting, it coulda been me.
