    FYI

Those are Step Tubes, not Running Boards. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are really different.

They may call them running boards...but they're step tubes. I've heard step tubes called running boards, but never running boards called step tubes. No biggie, just thought I'd point out the difference.

    These are running boards:

Purpose of both is to act as a step, yes. Running Boards hug the body much closer then Step Tubes. Both attach via pre taped holes in the lower body.

I don't use mine to get in & out of the truck, but I use them for strapping down my canoe. They also act as a form of protection from gravel, dirt & rock dings. They sit higher than the frame, so they don't effect ground clearance....even though it may appear that way.

My truck came with the OEM step tubes....they were nice, but I liked the cleaner look of the running boards as they didn't stick out as far. Those mentioned above look good...go for it if you want them.

Yes, I have a 2016 that should have been here last week but it's not, I thought I order some, but I guess I need a lesson in what I what vs what I need.
I what some protection from door dings and then use them for the wife to get in and out of the truck along with easier washing the top and of course I think they look nice
This is what I was looking at.

I originally order 3 inch NFAB's put them on and the driver side was right against the body of the truck. Sent them back and went with Ironic steps from Runningboardwarehouse. I like how they look and protect the side of the truck and getting in. My wife thinks they look good. Soon as spring rolls around I will be putting my Stealth 6 wheels and bigger tire.

You said your truck came with OEM tubes, and you swapped to those running boards in the pic. I have those on my DCLB as well, and just assumed they were the OEM as I bought it used. Are they Toyota, or a aftermarket company?
