Why not simply leave the damn pump off?

I removed mine, connected the input hose to the output in a closed loop, removed all of the extra pulleys and ran a shorter belt.

Unlike Greg, I like my power steering (my '40 is manual though). Even if there is a screen in the reservoir, it is possible for particles large enough to cause damage to get through. Definitely don't keep throwing pumps on it if they keep shitting out. Atleast get everything flushed out, inspect it and if necessary, replaced.

Yeah I really think it was the pump too, I got the truck put back together and we bled the system and the pump was actually making noises like it was working when i went lock to lock. We put the truck back on all 4 tires and the steering worked like brand new no noises. Went around the block and it got louder and louder then i could smell something and as i was pulling back into the shop driveway it went out and i lost steering asssit. The reservoir had backed up again and over flowed, when i drained the system there were fresh metal shavings in the reservoir filter.

Dude i would totally take tou up on genuine toyota parts! Let me get to the bottom of this and ill pm you. I checked out the trail gear pump system you talked about and that looks like something i might even go to. i cant have my power steering blow up 80 miles out in the desert

I like your style hahaha but i need power steering for my 35s and to go fast off road. I have been driving with no power steering for a few weeks now and its impossible to parallel park my truck, turn around in parking lots and its violent off road because the steering wheel gets ripped from my hands and ill break my fingers.

The thing is I have removed every line multiple times and flushed them out with strong compressed air and water. I thibk i have flushed the system 4-5 times, i dint see where this metal could be coming from anymore. And the rack shows no signs of wear or stress. No leaks and no noises and it cycles fine like the new one i bought and returned.

Im lost as to what to do.

The chances of getting two POS pumps from autozone isnt that likely but then again maybe it is i have talked to a few people that have gone through multiple parts from autozone before they got a good one

I totally understand. My work truck never sees dirt and has lightweight stock diameter street wheels and tires on it and so steers easier.



I was around when almost all vehicles had manual steering, so the trick to parking is never to try to turn your wheels when they are not in motion. Even if your wheels are moving just a few inches at a time you can gradually turn the steering wheel without needing a lot of effort.

Yeah no one really knows what the stock pressure is exactly, and even more important they don't know what pressure the stock rack can handle.

I don't care about the extra pressure since I am running a steering box post-SAS, so if it leaks, I will rebuild it. It can handle the 1650 psi in fresh form all day. What I really need is the extra flow, for the hydro assist.

Yeah i havent seen any confirmed numbers but i know the pump pressure varies with how you are turning, 1200-1800 psi would seem fair. The stock rack looks pretty stout compaired to the remanufactured shit pile rack that showed up at my door that i returned. I think my rack is fine. Just having issues keeping pressure to it. I might just pull the trigger on the trail gear pump set up. Looks nice and strong

I keep bouncing ideas around in my head and with my buddies and my only conclusions are this,

a. the remanufactured pumps from shitozone are really poorly done and spray painted black so they just can't handle the stress of high psi and my 35s. (why/how could they even sell these if thats the case)

b. there is something wrong with the reservoir even though I flushed it multiple times it is still backing up and cutting off the P.S. fluid to the pump causing it to whine and burn up.

c. There is a collapsed line or some clog somewhere even though I pulled all three P.S. lines off the truck and flushed them multiple times.

d. the rack is bad, even though it functioned flawlessly when the most recent pump worked for my trip around the block. I have also removed and compared this rack to another one and no signs of wear or breakdown are present.


My next move maybe to
1) replace the reservoir and warranty this autozone pump a second time
2) flush everything AGAIN and buy nwiTaco's used pump for a good deal

Do you have hydroboost instead of vacuum boost? If you've got regular power steering and vacuum assist braking, the p/s reservoir is really simple and just has an inlet and outlet. Nothing to go wrong in there. If you're lines are flushed and clear, and you have a 100% known good rack, that only leave the pump.


Any chance you're overfilling it? Only takes about a litre

Seems a new reservoir wouldn't hurt since that's one item you haven't replaced. I just think the screen may still have a lot of residual gunk that still didn't get all flushed out.

Its got to be these cheapo remanufactured pumps, the reservoir flows water out of it like nothing is wrong and i dont think over filling is the issue, i only put around a liter in there and it didnt over flow or act funny as we idled the truck and bled the lines for a few minutes

I dont think a lot of water is good but I flushed my hoses and reservoir out with water and dried it all. Oil and water dont mix..

Fed up with remanufactured parts, autozone has burned me and a bridge.

ordered this today



I am replacing everything but the rack and I feel like this is the best step I can take. When I installed the second autozone pump everything seemed to be working fine. Like I said we dropped the truck down and my first use of the steering felt like the day I bought the truck, no noise, no snags, no grinding sounds or vibrations, I could turn my 35s with one finger. I backed out of the shop and started to take a lap around the block, the noise got louder, and louder when I would turn the wheel (like the pump was struggling) then half way back I could smell something getting hot, the sounds went silent and I lost steering assist. I am convinced the rack is 100% fine and these remanufactured pumps keep failing. The first replacement pump I got from autozone didnt even work right out of the box...

I don't think anyone's run that pump on a stock rack. Which pump did you get the 1450 or 1650 psi?
